Ledyard, Connecticut: Forested Homeland of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe
The scenery in Ledyard is characterized by dense birch, maple, and sassafras forests that cover a broad swath of southeast Connecticut. This rugged wilderness is home to the Mashantucket Pequot tribe and has been since 1666. Visitors can learn about the reservation’s history through lifelike dioramas, Native American art, and artifacts at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center on the north side of town. Climb to the top of the museum’s 185-foot tower to see panoramic views of the wooded landscape and nearby swamplands.
Ledyard is also just a 15-minute drive from the coast. Head to Bluff Point State Park to enjoy forested hiking and biking trails that lead to a mile of sandy, secluded beachfront. A few miles north, the town of Mystic preserves the feel of 18th-century coastal New England. You can get a feel for early life here by exploring the old-timey shops at Olde Mistick Village or visiting the Museum of America and the Sea, which chronicles the area’s maritime history.
