Portland, Oregon: Quirky Riverfront City Known for Its City Parks

Extensive bikeways, edgy chefs, indie-rock bands, and progressive environmentalists—counterculture is almost a way of life in Portland. And it’s certainly a source of civic pride. Locals have adopted the slogan “Keep Portland Weird,” which is brandished on bumper stickers and in businesses all over the town. The city has always been a little ahead of its time; it was originally planned with strict urban-growth boundaries that left plenty of room for parks and other green spaces. Today, in new developments, shops are built at street level with apartments above them—following a European model that complements Portland’s slightly European, laid-back atmosphere.

The downtown area is a refreshing mix of the traditional and the offbeat: high-rise buildings are interspersed with clothing boutiques and restaurants serving sustainable cuisine. Streets here are narrow and the blocks are compact to encourage walking, which visitors are wont to do to take in the parks, plazas, and fountains. A popular place to hang out is the Pioneer Courthouse Square, a 40,000-square-foot public space often referred to as “Portland’s living room.” In warmer months, it hosts free shows and festivals, as does Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park, which was named 1 of 10 Great Public Spaces in America in 2012 by the American Planning Association.

NOT a recommendation! Truly disappointing. No coffee maker and no refrigerator in the room. When we checked in (didn't let us in until after 4 p.m.), NO towels in the room and only four clothes hangers. Windows (city view meant view of street and building across the street only) were filthy. Last day there, towels were not serviced and bathroom was not cleaned. Service at the front desk was sketchy at best. And the homeless problem immediately adjacent to the hotel was awful.

A quiet gem on the edge of the Pearl District Booked three nights at this quiet, comfortable hotel and was warmly greeted by Chloe, whose knowledge of Portland’s restaurants and coffee spots was really helpful to this first-time visitor. I asked for a quiet room, so was given an upstairs room that overlooked the roof of an adjacent building, but was very quiet, so I didn’t mind the lack of view. Rooms are spacious and bedding was comfy. The bathrooms are nicely appointed, with ample hot water in a large shower with a phenomenal shower head. Best of all, this place is a quiet refuge in a city that offers plenty of activity. I extended my stay to five nights, which allowed me enough time to explore Portland’s extensive foodie attractions. There is a Harlow Vegetarian Cafe about a mile away that serves up some of the best smoothies, salads, and vegetarian bowls that I’ve ever tasted. Don’t confuse this with the coffee bar in the hotel’s adjacent lobby or you’ll be disappointed (they are both located on Harlow Street). There is a coffee bar/cocktail bar in the adjacent lobby space which is quite charming but seldom used (which is a shame because it’s a great place to enjoy coffee & conversation with a friend). During my stay they were updating their cocktail menu, so Jamie, who was also working at guest reception, made me a custom lime & coconut milk cocktail that was quite tasty. Another review described this hotel as having Southern charm (think: large staircase, good-sized rooms with spacious bathrooms) and I would agree with that. If you’re seeking a good night’s sleep in one of Portland’s less popular neighborhoods, give the Harlow Hotel a try. Reasonable rates & a quiet, unassuming vibe. I would return.

Hotel with no service My husband and I recently stayed at the Harlow Hotel in Portland, Oregon, and unfortunately, our experience was far from satisfactory. Upon arrival, we found the accommodations to be disappointing. The room had a strange and unpleasant smell, which made my stay uncomfortable. In addition, there was no where to store our clothes. Despite the potential charm of the hotel, this issue significantly impacted our overall experience. Additionally, the service from one front desk attendant, specifically Jamie, was less than welcoming. We encountered rudeness and a lack of helpfulness that was quite surprising. A warm and professional reception is essential in hospitality, and this was certainly lacking during our stay. Housekeeping was another area of concern. The beds were not made, toilet paper was not refilled, and trash cans were left unemptied during our entire three night stay. These are basic expectations for any hotel, and their neglect reflects poorly on the hotel’s standards. We hope the management takes these concerns seriously and works towards improving their services. Until then, we cannot recommend the Harlow Hotel to other travelers.

WONDERFUL! WOW! What an unexpected pleasant surprise this is! I am in Portland for one night, and wanted a hotel to get a decent night sleep and a warm shower. Hotel Harlow is spot on! If You’ve ever stayed in a Charleston or Savannah boutique hotels, you’ll feel at home here at Hotel Harlow. Victoria was the gracious hostess that welcomed Me into this special place. The Gods willing, I expect to return during the upcoming Farwest Horticultural Expo in August. The made to order coffee is wonderful! THANK YOU! Hobo Nomad!

Best avoided So one thing i hate in the usa is every hotel taking a deposit especially for one night! This one took over $100 AND 27 days on no refund for that Email for hotel bounces back (tried from 3 different email addresses) and contact form used twice from website and no reply Very very bad customer service Actual Hotel is fine in terms of staying for balance
