Kansas City, Missouri: Barbecue, Jazz, and Nightlife

In Kansas City, the ratio of fountains to barbecue joints is roughly 2:1—as in, 200-plus public fountains and more than 90 restaurants where you can order the city’s signature slow-smoked meat. Though Kansas City is known for its aquatic architecture and barbecue, it has also evolved into an artistic hub. Here, you’ll find a legendary history of jazz and blues, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, prized for its European paintings and Imperial Chinese art. Add a die-hard sports community and a downtown area named one of America’s best by Forbes magazine, and the at-times overlooked Kansas City has all the makings of a memorable getaway: culture, Midwestern charm, and an endless supply of sauce-slathered ribs.

Though the storied jazz scene continues to thrive in numerous clubs around 18th and Vine, it’s the flashy Power and Light District that draws a fashionable late-night crowd. This nine-block neighborhood in the middle of downtown is home to more than 50 shops, restaurants, and bars. If the weather is warm, head to the open-air rooftop lounge at Elements for a drink under the moonlight.

Bring your own pillow We stayed in the Kansas City tower. I think the Las Vegas tower has updated rooms. As others have mentioned, there are a lot of stains on the carpet and furniture, the wallpaper was peeling, and the baseboards were pretty grungy. You won’t find any bathroom amenities like lotion or a makeup remover cloth, but there was one small bar of soap and shower dispensers. I think if I would have paid more than $89 for the room I would have been disappointed. A few strange things are the very small pillows on the bed. They seemed about half the size of a standard sized pillow and were a bit hard and lumpy. The blow dryer was mounted to the bathroom wall and the cord was so short that you couldn’t use the bathroom mirror when using the dryer. The last odd thing was the furniture arrangement. The bed and couch were facing North/South on opposite walls, but the TV was on the East/West facing wall so no matter where you sat the TV was not in front of you.

KC First Floor Rooms Terrible This was the second visit in a year. Previous visit was March, 2024. Sent email after 2024 visit addressing the condition of the KC tower first floor pet rooms and hallway. Absolutely nothing has improved 11 months later. Wallpaper falling off, ceilings water stained, spider webs, hallway carpet a mess.

TERRIBLE HOTEL The hotel room was absolutely disgusting and old. Stains on the rug, couch, walls. Absolutely gross. They don’t service your room daily so you run out of towels, coffee and other things you could use daily. I was only here for work and would NEVER come back. Do not recommend.
