Sterling, Virginia: Family-Friendly Activities Near Arlington

Sterling offers plenty of outdoor and family-friendly activities just outside of America’s capital. At Algonkian Regional Park, for example, you can hike the Gabrielson Trail, kayak the Potomac River, or tee off at the golf course. Bring the whole brood to Volcano Island Waterpark to enjoy the waterslides, sandy beach area, and pool. The area’s agricultural history gets the spotlight at the Heritage Farm Museum. Stop inside an old-fashioned general store and play in an interactive farm exhibit complete with Equiponies and a pre-WWII kitchen without electricity.

Arlington is only about 20 miles away from Sterling. In town, you’ll find quite a few historic attractions that are nationally associated with Washington, DC. One of these is the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Department of Defense, which you can tour by appointment. Along the Potomac lies Arlington National Cemetery, which has an eternal flame flickering at John F. Kennedy’s gravesite. Watch as soldiers switch shifts during the Changing of the Guard ceremony at the cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknowns, a monument for the unidentified remains of US servicemen and servicewomen.
