Flagstaff, Arizona: Route 66 History and Outdoor Adventures

Mentioned in Nat King Cole’s song “Route 66,” the northern Arizona city of Flagstaff was once a popular pit stop for those driving along the 2,400-mile highway. The town’s sunny skies and warm weather continue to draw travelers today, allowing cyclists, hikers, and joggers to enjoy more than 50 miles of trails and more than 650 acres of city parks. East of Flagstaff, you’ll find the Walnut Canyon National Monument, where you can hike the Rim or Island trails while exploring cliff formations and remnants of dwellings once inhabited by indigenous peoples.

Flagstaff’s elevation and clear night skies made it the perfect location for the now-famous Lowell Observatory. Pluto was discovered from the observatory in 1930, and space research continues there today. The site is open to the public for guided daytime tours.

Really enjoyed our stay- my sister and I had a quick overnight and everything (room, toiletries, sauna, drinks at the bar, coffee) was spot-on. Love the reno job and the mid-century modern vibe. We are already planning to stay again next year. Fresh-baked breakfast pastries would be my only suggestion- the chocolate croissants at 9am looked amazing, but they were old.

CLASSIC VINTAGE MOTOR LODGE NOT TO BE MISSED! We just returned from a 4,000+ mile road trip from Chicago to LA and back, and we were so happy to find High Country Motor Lodge in Flagstaff, Arizona. Throughout our travels, we were definitely looking for the fun and charm of the vintage motels of the 1960's with all the modern conveniences and latest trends in motor touring. High Country was exceptional, offering a beautiful large, clean, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing guest room. The location was easy to find, the grounds beautifully maintained, and the bar and food offerings were delicious and so appreciated. We were sad that the pool was closed for renovations, but we fully intend on getting back to your beautiful and charming High Country and wish that there were more on our route. Thank you!

Perfect little motor lodge with funky old school mountain feel Perfect stay! This place is adorable, modern, kitschy, and subtly glam all at the same time. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. The food was great and they accommodated my celiac (gluten) perfectly and double checked too. Rooms were so cute and well appointed. It was quiet at night but our room did not face the quad so that might be louder. We didn’t have time to do the whole Nordic spa experience as we were just there one evening but it looked like a nice spot. Definitely want to return.

Pool and spa were not open when we were here but people say that they are wonderful. Love the pour over coffee in the rooms. Parking is easy and free.
