Hotel at a Glance: Hill House Inn

Hill House Inn is named after business-savvy brothers Joel and Spencer Hills, who built a small empire of local shops in Mendocino in the mid-1800s. At the height of their success, they purchased a tract of land overlooking the Pacific Ocean and named it the Hill Estate Ranch. Today, Hill House Inn sits on part of that 320-acre property, surrounded by soaring cypress trees.

  • Hollywood connection: Guests have included Bette Davis and Kris Kristofferson, and some visitors might recognize the inn for its recurring role in the Murder, She Wrote TV series.
  • What’s nearby: The hotel is about a five-minute walk from shops and cafés in town.
  • Road-trip ready: Hill House Inn is just off of Highway 1, which hugs California’s coast.

Mendocino, California: New England Look-Alike on Scenic Pacific Headlands

In the mid-19th century, Mendocino rose to prominence as a redwood-logging hub along California’s northern coast, attracting a number of lumberjacks from New England. These West Coast pioneers brought East Coast architecture with them, building their new homes in the Victorian and saltbox styles. The town has such a New England look that it stood in for a Maine fishing village during the filming of the TV series Murder, She Wrote. For a peek at some of these picturesque old buildings, head to the Ford House, which serves as the official Visitor Information Center of Mendocino Village, and the Kelley House Museum, which preserves 19th-century photographs and furniture in a house built in 1861.

In the 1950s, when it was in danger of becoming a ghost town, Mendocino was thrust back into the spotlight thanks to painter Bill Zacha’s Mendocino Art Center. Still open today, the art center has taken advantage of its scenic setting along the town’s coastline, which has been the inspiration for several watercolor and oil canvases. A quick stroll south will bring you to one such scenic spot, Mendocino Headlands State Park, where waves crash along carving arches, grottoes, and stony bluffs.

It was beautiful inside and out, really quiet and relaxing, the staff was polite and friendly but the best part is there is a cemetery right across the street. If you have ever seen the Haunting on Hill House you would understand.

Not what it once was This place must have been something back in the day, you can tell it was once a beautiful destination. But, the years have not been kind to Hill House Inn, and it is in a sad state. First issue, upon arrival we found out that they no longer have cable and are in the process of getting a new carrier, so, no TV. To be fair they do state that in the confirmation e-mail, but we somehow missed it. Refrigerators are not provided in the rooms, but my husband is an insulin dependent diabetic so we had to have a refrigerator. We were able to purchase one for $20.00. The restaurant and bar are no longer open which was disappointing. From the outside to the inside, everything is so run down. It was warm and we wanted to open the windows, but they have no screens on them, and unfortunately our ocean view king room was one of the rooms that had no balcony. We finally decided to open the windows and risk letting the flies in so we could cool off for a bit. We were told that it was under new management, I can only hope that the new people restore it to it's former glory, or at least update everything. When that happens, we will be back, but not while it's still in it's current condition, not at the price we paid. The saving grace were the ladies cleaning the room on our floor, they were very friendly and helpful during out stay! Also the man who brought us our refrigerator was very nice. We hope to try a stay here again one day when the upgrades are made.

Very dated I picked this place for a little getaway. Location was perfect for my needs. Curteous staff. But that was the highlight. The rooms are stale and musty. And the decor just old. Now, I like old if it's done right, makes character. This was not it. Has potential if it was cared for. The rooms has old bathroom cheap fixtures with water stains and build up. The plastic shower curtains looked as old as me. There was no air, which is fine because of the location, but no screens? We had to leave window open to air out but no screens on the window. This place has potential to be adorable. My suggestion is wait until new owners renovated. It needs it.

Denise C. Oh boy! It was a run down old ancient hotel that looked like it used to be a pretty nice place. They used to make movies there , like “murder she wrote! “ There were pictures of many actors who stayed there many years ago .There was an old scary looking restaurant that is now closed . At night, it looked like it was from “the shining “. The bed was ok hard . It was warm and there was no air , and we couldn’t open patio door because there were no screens. The curtains looked ok but the Lacey sheers under were all ripped up. There was a nice view from back of building of the ocean bluffs as we were on a hill. We luckily had internet ,but then there was no tv service. The towels were new and bedding seemed clean! There was a huge ceiling spider and my daughter took care of him ,. I thought there may be more so I had trouble falling asleep. The lobby had delicious kerig coffee and tea. The workers were extremely cordial. Downtown a short five minute walk , and there were coffee shops , restaurants and stores.
