Portland, Oregon: Quirky Riverfront City Known for Its City Parks

Extensive bikeways, edgy chefs, indie-rock bands, and progressive environmentalists—counterculture is almost a way of life in Portland. And it’s certainly a source of civic pride. Locals have adopted the slogan “Keep Portland Weird,” which is brandished on bumper stickers and in businesses all over the town. The city has always been a little ahead of its time; it was originally planned with strict urban-growth boundaries that left plenty of room for parks and other green spaces. Today, in new developments, shops are built at street level with apartments above them—following a European model that complements Portland’s slightly European, laid-back atmosphere.

The downtown area is a refreshing mix of the traditional and the offbeat: high-rise buildings are interspersed with clothing boutiques and restaurants serving sustainable cuisine. Streets here are narrow and the blocks are compact to encourage walking, which visitors are wont to do to take in the parks, plazas, and fountains. A popular place to hang out is Pioneer Courthouse Square, a 40,000-square-foot public space often referred to as “Portland’s living room.” In warmer months, the square hosts free shows and festivals, as does Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park, which was named 1 of 10 Great Public Spaces in America in 2012 by the American Planning Association.

Great New Rooms and a Excellent Relaxing Location Off I-5 in Portland/Vancouver area. Clean, modern suites. Excellent service. Close to everything Portland and Vancouver Downtown have to offer, nice mall with a lot of familiar stores. Easy to catch a ride to local attractions. Rooms have been redone with a refreshing modern touch and are very relaxing. Great selection of choices for breakfast and the heated pool and spa hit the spot after a long day of meetings. Sure to make this hotel my choice the next time I am in the Portland/Vancouver area. Thank you

In renovation In the middle of a remodel. We had a room on the updated 4 th floor which was very well done. The location is tucked away which is good and bad. Not many restaurants near by. Not really walkable anywhere. There is a target near by. Even after the renovation is complete not sure I would stay due to location

Recharge stay I am a pilot car in the wind energy field. We are loading blades out of the port. I am usually here for a few days. I call this hotel my "recharge " stay. Everyone from the front desk, housekeeping to breakfast crew are so kind and helpful. The hotel is very clean. The beds and pillows are awsome. If you enjoy a good ht breakfast, this is your place. I enjoy the fitness center and sauna. All well kept. Easy access to shopping and restaurants. Thank you.

Clean with nice comfy linens Was happy staying here with my 2 grandchildren. It was quiet and comfortable. Very nice linens in the room. Plenty of pillows. Unfortunately, housekeeping was not done without a phone call to the desk even though we had been gone all day. But the staff was friendly . Best free breakfast I think I have ever been treated to! Nice indoor heated pool and hot tub , after a long rainy day out and about.
