Queens, New York City: Gotham's Largest Borough

Those who don't live in New York City may not appreciate just how big Queens is—if it were its own independent city, it would be America's 4th largest by population, roughly the size of Houston. By area, Queens is the largest borough, more than five times the size of Manhattan. And it's considered one of the country's most ethnically diverse areas, with Irish, Polish, Colombian, Italian, and Peruvian populations, among many others.

With great size comes several world-class tourist attractions, starting with the New York Mets' Citi Field, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (where the US Open is held annually), and the Unisphere, a large metal globe built for the 1964 World's Fair. Nearby you'll find the Queens Museum, best known for the Panorama, a built-to-scale model of New York City with miniature replicas of nearly 900,000 buildings.

Triple check they didn’t over book We booked 2 rooms with queen beds. When we arrived to check in the hotel had over booked and we didn’t have our rooms. They offered us a king room with no AC. We didn’t have any other option so we had to take it. We crammed 4 people into a king size bed. Make sure they have rooms before you check in.

Excellent While my wife and I were in Queens for a weekend last month, we lodged at the Holiday Inn Express Woodside, and we would recommend this hotel to others enthusiastically. Our room was comfortable, clean, and quiet. The fitness room was well equipped. The staff members were outstanding: kind and helpful. The included breakfast buffet offered a variety of good food and beverage options, and for other meals, a number of restaurants were within walking distance for us. Also walkable was the Woodside train station, which was useful to us, when we attended a family event on Long Island.

Pleasant Surprise We were moved to this hotel after the hotel we were originally booked at oversold their rooms. I was angry at being rebooked at the Holiday Inn Express, but it ended up being one of the best hotel stays we’ve had. If you’re looking for a hotel to stay at in the area, I would definitely recommend the Holiday Inn Express Woodside LaGuardia Airport. When I looked up the hotel on Google Maps, I noticed that it’s next to a fire station. I was nervous about hearing sirens all night while I tried to sleep, but I never once heard them. Other reviews I read before staying at the hotel said how quiet it is and they were right. This actually was the quietest hotel I’ve ever stayed in - no neighbor noise, no hallway noise, and no street noise. Our room was facing the side street (64th St.) and it was great. The pillows and mattress were extremely comfortable. I slept great every night of our stay. The hotel was very secure (no random, non-guests coming and going) and the area felt safe, even when walking around at night. Parking is available at the hotel, but there’s only 12 or so spots. For a SUV we would have had to pay $50 a day. I searched the area and found a parking garage two or three blocks away that cost around $33 total for four days (although there are no in-and-out privileges). There is also a decent amount of street parking on the surrounding side streets if you’re comfortable with parking on the road. Breakfast was great. There is an automatic pancake machine where you press the button and it makes two pancakes in two minutes. There are also several “hot“ selections each day to include scrambled eggs (actually pretty good) breakfast meat, a potato dish, along with the standard fare of cereal, yogurt, fruit, baked goods and bread. There’s also coffee (of course), juice, and milk. The seating area isn’t large, but it was always clean and there were always tables available. The food never ran out and the staff was quick to bring more if anything was running low. The hotel, including our room, was very clean the hotel staff (especially the two ladies at the front desk) were extremely friendly and helpful. As great as the hotel was, the staff made our stay even better.
