Some are surprised to find a white rhinoceros or a kookaburra about 50 miles southeast of Orlando, but notable beasts and birds have been common in the Melbourne, Florida area for eons. The remains of mammoths, mastodons, and saber-toothed cats have been found—among those of about 60 other species—at a section of Crane Creek called the “Melbourne Bone Bed.” For a taste of present-day wildlife, you can take one of Forever Florida’s eco-safaris or visit the Brevard Zoo, an award-winning zoo with giraffes, kangaroos, ostriches, and previously mentioned rhino and kookaburra. At the zoo’s Treetop Trek, you can witness the area’s natural scenes from above, thanks to creatively positioned tightropes, crab walks, jungle bridges, nets, and ziplines.
About a half-hour drive north, you’ll find the surfing mecca of Cocoa Beach—nicknamed Florida’s “Space Coast” for the nearby Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral—which occupies a 72-mile stretch of scenic shoreline on a barrier island off Florida’s Atlantic coast. The Kennedy Space Center’s exhibits include hands-on replicas of astronaut capsules, an authentic Saturn V rocket from NASA’s Apollo program, and Alan Shepard’s space suit. After visiting the space center, take a scenic route through the 140,000-acre Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge; keep your eyes peeled for alligators, bald eagles, and shorebirds.
