Hotel at a Glance: Homestead Resort
The 126-year-old Homestead Resort has a near-miraculous feature on its property—its very own geothermic crater for swimming, diving, and soaking. Surrounded by Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, the historic resort also draws visitors for its proximity to outdoor recreation, its family friendly atmosphere, beautiful resort grounds, the on-site golf course Crater Springs, and its charming accommodations. * Must-see: The 10,000-year-old Homestead Crater is the place to go swimming year round. The interior is heated by spring mineral water to a constant temperature of 90–96 degrees, and the hole in the dome lets in sunlight. The price of admission is $11 Monday–Thursday, $16 Friday–Sunday; kids under 5 years old come in for free. Separate reservations are required and can be made by calling 435-657-3840. * Spacious rooms and cottages: Garden rooms have private decks or patios. Some feature vintage quilts and century-old photographs of the property. * Fore!: Go golfing on the 18-hole Crater Springs Golf Course, which features GPS-equipped golf carts. Guests must call (435) 657-3848 for tee times. * Simon’s Restaurant serves pot roast, country-fried steak, and other comfort foods. * Wasatch Mountain State Park is just minutes from the resort and offers miles of mountain trails for hiking.
Midway, Utah: Mountain Scenery, Skiing, and Caves in Northern Utah
The little northern Utah town of Midway seems made for outdoors lovers. It’s less than 20 miles from Deer Valley, which was ranked the No. 1 ski resort in North America by the readers of Ski Magazine. When it’s not ski season, you can ride a scenic chairlift to the top of Bald Mountain and go hiking, or mountain bike through 400 miles of trails.
Hike into Timpanogos Cave National Monument, three limestone caverns that are connected by manmade tunnels, where you can see stalactites and stalagmites. Don’t miss a chance to view the area’s spectacular mountain scenery. A great way to do this is on the Heber Creeper, a 100-year-old steam locomotive that travels next to jaw-dropping views of the Provo Canyon Scenic Byway.
