Scottsdale, Arizona: Stucco Mansions amid Rocky Desert Landscape

Scottsdale once served as ranch land where farmers grew oranges and lemons and cowboys kicked up dust in the fierce, dry heat of the Sonoran Desert. That era earned Scottsdale the nickname of “The West's Most Western Town.” Today, it is an affluent city landscaped with lush green grass and lined with stucco mansions. For a glimpse of the city's Old West roots, head to Old Town Scottsdale, where wooden boardwalks and hitching posts sit in front of a retro ice-cream parlor and rustic specialty shops.

Upon arriving in Scottsdale, you know you're in the desert—cacti and tumbleweeds dot the landscape, and dry shrubs and gnarled trees cover the McDowell Mountains in the distance. To get a closer look at Southwestern flora, head to the Desert Botanical Garden. There, themed trails wind past huge cacti and other moisture-hoarding succulents, best seen in the cooler early morning or twilight hours.

Nice little boutique hotel. It’s an older building, but they’ve done a pretty good job updating what they could and making it look fun and chic. Great option for the value we were given!

We love Hotel Adeline. Super cool and chill vibe. Most employees are nice, helpful. However, on this instance, they did not fully honor the Groupon deal I booked. The resort fee was to be waived, and a $25 food and drink credit was to be included. The person on duty at checkout did not honor the f/d credit, even though he acknowledged that it was part of the deal when I booked through Groupon.

Overall friendly staff; try to get a room on the 2nd floor poolside Overall - the property has friendly staff and a nice pool, but walls are thin. We were upgraded to a poolside room (titanium elite) which is much nicer than a room facing the parking lot (the standard room). We stayed for 2 nights. The first night our room was on the ground floor. The windows are not very well insulated so you can hear anyone talking outside. The toilet was clogged and we had to call someone to help unclog it. The next morning it was clogged again, so the front desk allowed us to move to a new room on the 2nd floor. This room was much better (less people talking right in front of your room) but there are no elevators. The $25 per night destination fee is odd- it supposedly covers parking and is essentially a $25 per night credit towards the restaurant. The credit doesn’t roll over so you have to use it every day you’re there. The restaurant wasn’t bad - all charges automatically get 20% gratuity added. We got drinks at the bar the first night and the second day got breakfast. In the end, our bill didn’t include a destination fee so no “credit” was needed. The platinum breakfast was a continental option (see photo) which we opted not to do. We forgot something in the first room and I had remembered that same night. The hotel was great at contacting housekeeping and I retrieved the item the next morning. Location is near a mall and also near old town.

Birthday Stay My husband and I had the pleasure to stay at Hotel Adeline for our visit to Scottsdale. Upon arrival were greeted by staff who I had previously informed that my husband would be celebrating a birthday. Thank you for making him feel special. We were upgraded to a suite and the room was so very spacious, and the bed comfortable. One of the highlights was going to the speakeasy inside the hotel. Jean the bartender was a gem; she makes a great old fashion and my husband, and I enjoyed chopping it up with her. The location was perfect was close to plenty of dining and shopping. Thank you to Jake whose hospitality made check in and our stay pleasurable. If I ever make it back to Scottsdale I would stay here again.

Great Hotel, with great staff This is by far one of the best hotels I have stayed in and not because it’s glamorous or top of the line like a four seasons. It’s becasue it’s just a great well run Marriott Hotel that makes you feel so welcomed. If you are there ask for Nate at the speakeasy or bar, he is so lovely and always asks “hows your day” and has time to chat. He has great recommendations to help visitors. The breakfast is lovely and a nice selection and the coffee is the best. The ladies that work breakfast are so friendly and meet you with a smile. The pool is great and the area well maintained and clean. I saw staff constantly cleaning around the pool. The rooms are so comfy and the bed is to die for. Housekeeping did an amazing job. The front desk staff are great too. Very welcoming. This is my go to place to stay when I visit my son at GCU.
