Pacific Grove, California: Sleepy Coastal Town Next to Monterey

The oceanfront town of Carmel-by-the-Sea shares its central California peninsula with the city of Monterey, but is far more serene than its cosmopolitan neighbor. It populates its streets with fairytale cottages designed by Hugh Comstock and inspired by the illustrations of Arthur Rackham—moss-topped cottages blending middle-aged stylings from England and Germany with a bit of folklore. It wades in its California sun along the white sandy beaches lined with trails between the cypress trees or ventures south to the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve along the rocky shoreline. In addition to natural and architectural charms, it's home to the Mission San Carlos Borromeo del río Carmelo—first built in 1797 and known as one of the most fully restored Roman Catholic missions in California.

Very nice motel style Inn Slightly difficult to find but once we arrived we were greeted by a friendly receptionist. The room was clean and nicely furnished. Easily walkable to the main locations in Carmel. Breakfast arrived in a thermal bag left in fron of the door and was a nice surprise to open. All in all it was all very nice albeit pricey, but Carmel is.

Average This motel is just average...the bed was very old as was the bathroom...rooms are very dated. In Ned if a renovation which I understand is now happening. It's still a bit of a walk to the beach. It's ok to walk downhill to it but a ltitle tougher coming back uphill. The breakfast delivered was a nice perk. The walls are really thin and it's pretty noisy. The rooms have no airconditioning and the windows barely open so it was unbearably stuffy and this was October never mind what it would be like in summer time. So hopefully the reno address a lot of these issues otherwise I would pay a ltitle extra and stay somewhere more comfortable

Time for a refurbishment We stayed here for one night on our way to Napa. Carmel is quite small and so whilst the hotel is not in a prime location, it was only a short walk to the main street and the beach was walkable. Our room was a deluxe king room and was spacious with a large bed that was comfortable enough. Apart from the staff being pleasant and helpful, that unfortunately was where the positives stopped. The decoration in the room was way past its best and needed a complete refit - window frames had pretty much had it, the bathroom was small and basic. The worst thing for me however was the room came with an unpleasant musty smell. It could also have been cleaner - not dirty as such, but cobwebs were in evidence. Breakfast is basic and is delivered to your room in a cool bag. Carmel is a very nice small town where I would like to spend more time - it would not be in this hotel.

A Stop on our Roadtrip We drove to Carmel from Yosemite and stayed at the Dolphin Inn. This was a lovely, quaint hotel. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. There is no restaurant but breakfast is served: you have a card in the room where you tick off your requirements and leave at reception and in the morning it is left on your doorstep in a cool bag - a really quaint idea and a lovely experience. If you judge/compare this as a new experience - you will love it. If you are judging/comparing with the big hot and cold buffet breakfast in large hotels you will be disappointed. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and each had two double beds.
