Houston, Texas: Space History and Museums in Nation’s Fourth-Largest City

As the nation’s fourth-largest city by population, Houston has established itself as one of the Gulf Coast’s most thriving cultural hubs. The city's museum district has 19 museums covering everything from history to art to science. For art lovers, the Menil Collection—which Frommer’s calls “one of the great private collections of the world”—is a must-see. Here, you’ll browse an array of 20th-century art from Jasper Johns, René Magritte, and Andy Warhol, as well as artifacts from Africa and the Pacific Islands.

You could also spend an entire day exploring Houston’s science institutions. When Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell famously stated, “Houston, we have a problem,” he was talking to mission control at Space Center Houston. Here, visitors can tour the historic mission-control room and get a behind-the-scenes look at astronauts training for the International Space Station. Along Houston’s Hermann Park, The Health Museum exhibits a large-scale human body that you can enter to learn about how your organs operate.

It's not a place to stay for business I booked a reservation 1 week in advance and had one of the worst hotel experiences ever. On August 1, 2024, I attempted to check in at Hotel Derek but was met with really nasty front desk staffing and unprofessionalism. I was informed that there was no restaurant open in the entire hotel for any sort of breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The fitness center was also closed for any sort of workouts that I needed. Being a stage IV cancer patient there in Houston seeking treatment at MD Anderson, I am required to eat at least 3 to 4 times per day. I then kindly ask for a full refund and was met with attitude and unprofessionalism by the young women at the front desk. The front desk informed me that I should call American Airlines Advantage and ask for my funds to be returned. I then called Marriott Houston Medical Center Hotel, where I am an ambassador elite member and was welcomed with open arms. I then jumped in an Uber and headed over to the Marriott. Before I left Hotel Derek, I noticed how nasty the furniture in the lobby was. It was not appealing at all , in fact, it was outright disgusting. ( see pics ) I would not recommend this hotel to friends, family, or colleagues. Always read your reviews first. It will save you money and time.

Disappointing Staycation I have a major issue with being sold on several amenities but not having access to much. My family stayed at Hotel Derek in hopes of experiencing it before it closed down. I was told my rate came with access to the gym, breakfast for 2 daily, on site restaurant, room service, queen sized beds, in room fridge and safe. We arrived to find the gym and restaurant permanently closed (so no breakfast or room service), 12th floor ice machine was broken, no trash bags in cans, no lights in the parking deck after the valet levels, and bed that were full sized at best. Even the confirmation email boasted a great breakfast and great dining at Revolve. The room fridge doesn't work. I told the front desk and was told we could pack our things and go back down to move rooms. Unfortunately had an event that night so we didnt have time for moving. After a day out and about, our room wasn't cleaned (no clean towels, trash wasn't emptied, etc). We called own muliple times and didnt get an answer. When we finally did, we were told it was too late to have the room cleaned. I am beyond disappointed.

Jamesha Check-In Desk I had the opportunity to be helped by Jamesha at hotel Derek. She was extremely helpful and had a great attitude. I had some problems checking in and she was patient with me while I tried to figure out everything. I hope she remains successful in the future and continues to have great customer service!
