Savannah, Georgia: Historical Mansions and a Lively River Walk

Founded in 1733 as Georgia's first town, Savannah is not only one of the most graceful cities in the South but also one the most historic. The old but well-preserved architecture landed it on Forbes’s 2011 list of America's Best Downtowns, and Travel + Leisure dubbed it one of the top cities in the United States and Canada in 2013. The city's 22 famous public squares play host to some famous landmarks, such as antebellum-era houses framed by moss-covered oak trees. Head to Oglethorpe Square to see the Owens-Thomas House, an English Regency–style mansion completed in 1819 that now serves as a museum; tours here depart from the original carriage house and go past its charming English-style parterre garden.

Another relic of Savannah's past, River Street curves for about a mile along Savannah River's south bank. The cobblestone walkways are lined with 100-year-old cotton warehouses that have been converted into antique shops, brewpubs, and galleries. A short walk west of River Street will take you to the City Market, a four-block public meeting space on the edge of downtown.

Lied to us about breakfast charge - now having to dispute Booked a stay on March 31 which included 2 free breakfasts. Fortunately had a copy with me because it wasn't offered at check in and I had to ask. (Also had to ask for my mother's reservation.) At breakfast we presented the voucher which wasn't taken off our bill. Instead they said we would see it as a charge and then a credit for the 2 breakfasts which equaled $40. Checked my credit card bill on Apr 8 and of course there was no credit. Tried calling the hotel twice and the phone just rang and rang. Called the corporate number and an automated system redirected me back to the hotel. Finally disputed the charge w/ my credit card. My time is far too valuable to spend chasing $40 which is I'm sure what they are hoping for. As far as the hotel, it's clean and smells nice and the staff was friendly. Rooms are really small as it is a remodeled older hotel. Location is wonderful in the middle of everything. All that said, none of the good things make up for the hassle of having to chase money that should never have been charged in the first. Very angry over the whole situation.

Other hotels may be a better choice 1. We stayed from a Tuesday through Saturday. Our room was not cleaned until Friday when we told the reception that no one had cleaned it. 2. When we arrived, we were told that there is a daily “destination” fee of $25 added to our room fee. - little upset that we were not made aware of this when reserving rooms. 3. Beds were comfortable enough, but noise from Bay St. was quite loud. A/C unit made noises throughout night too. Room clean, reception polite. Elevators in good working condition. Would I stay here again? No. I think that almost any hotel in the downtown area would have been fine. For price we paid, I expect a little more.
