Long Beach, California: Art, Architecture, and the Historic Queen Mary

One of Long Beach’s most iconic attractions floats in the harbor across the bay: the Queen Mary, a former ocean liner and current museum-hotel hybrid. Built in the early 1930s as a luxury liner for the wealthy elite, the Queen Mary was transformed into a troopship during World War II. After nearly two more decades of civilian service, the ship retired to Long Beach. Thousands of annual visitors take guided tours of the boat, which is larger than the Titanic.

Back on land, independent playhouses and art galleries line the streets of the East Village Arts District. On the second Saturday of each month, the neighborhood hosts an art walk where galleries, boutiques, and cafés stay open late and local artists display original works. Long Beach’s architecture also has its own appeal. Geometry buffs may marvel at the Walter Pyramid sports arena, as well as the aptly named Skinny House at 708 Gladys Avenue, a 10-foot-wide structure reportedly built on a bet.

Great views, close to the cruise terminal, and lots to do! The Hotel Maya is a great place to stay before and after a cruise out of Long Beach. The hotel restaurant, Fuego, has excellent food and is reasonably priced. The rooms are clean although a little outdated, but they have tremendous bay views. There are great walking and biking trails on the hotel grounds, bike rentals, scooter rentals, and a nice gym and pool area. Every time I have stayed here, which is numerous, the customer service has been great, and they treat Diamond status members well. The hotel is walking distance to the cruise report and ha free shuttle service on demand.

If you're old, go somewhere else! Arrived from Los Angeles Airport about 10:30 pm, tired and stressed from long day of travel and rushed connections. The last thing I would have expected was a rude and crude receptionist at such a well renowned resort hotel . Not only he was short mannered but then he proceed to tell me that I had to carry my suitcase up three flights of stairs in the building furthest away!!! I am not young and by no means I could accomplished that gargantuan task!!! Luckily the security fellow was gracious enough to do that. So, beware ... if you're not a spring chicken anylonger, I would soncerely advise seeking accommodations elsewhere. AND BTW this is not a budget hotel!!!

Not all it was advertised as Honestly this hotel looked AMAZING on the website and per a few reviews. It was my fault for not searching more reviews from multiple sites. Check in was fine, they were able to hold our luggage and text us before 4pm to let us know it was ready. However, I paid a $75 upgrade fee for the Playa at the Maya view and while the room view itself was GREAT… one night at this hotel came out to over $500 and my issues is that people partied on their patios, blaring music until well after 11pm. Children running rampant while parents partied. The room connecting to ours had about 15 people in it at one point and the noise was even too loud for the TV to cover. This wasn’t a problem until it was after 11pm at night. The room itself needed to be vacuumed when we got there and I just let it go. After all, it overlooks a beach area. But the dust built up on the desk and other things was insane. You could tell the $500+ a night room hadn’t been deep cleaned in awhile. I was unaware I had to be a special level of Hilton member to request a late check out (again, this is my fault for not researching my own program better). But when I called the desk to request an hour later (our flight did not leave until 2pm and we knew there was little to do at the airport so we requested an hour to go get breakfast, ensure our things were ready to go, and room cleaned. The staff was SO rude like this request was absurd and that I was just scamming another hour in a mediocre hotel room. They provided an additional half hour. I JUST stayed at a Hilton last weekend for a funeral, who had no issues honoring a one hour late checkout. After all of the rooms around us stayed up until midnight partying loud and ignoring the properties rules, I never expected to be met with an attitude by the person on the other end of the phone. So then we down TO the desk to request and speak with someone in person. I was told, “you already requested a late check out. I GUESS, at most, we can do another half hour” (they didn’t even honor the first half hour. I was locked out of my room at 11:35am. Checkout was 11). For $500, please stay elsewhere. The queen mary is right next door and there are MANY options right across the bridge that are even closer to where everything is. The staff here is not friendly, the hotel wasn’t up to par with the cost, and overall I regret having wasted turn money on the experience.
