Big Spring, Texas: Historic West Texas Town with Museums, Parks, and Famed Watering Hole
Like its name suggests, the town of Big Spring is named after a large watering hole that was frequented by nomadic tribes and wildlife in Texas for centuries. Today, you can stroll along the shores of that spring at Comanche Trail Park. Around the corner, Big Spring State Park offers an aerial view of the village from a 200-foot bluff. A trail built by the Civilian Conservation Corps loops through the 382-acre state park and is popular with joggers and cyclists.
Stop at the Heritage Museum of Big Spring to peek at its collections of pioneer artifacts, Texas longhorn steer horns, dolls, and phonographs. The museum also operates The Potton House, a preserved estate that dates back to 1912, when Big Spring was in the midst of a railroad boom. Tours are available by appointment.
