Capitol Hill, Washington, DC: Monuments and Museums

The National Mall is a must-see for first-time visitors to Washington, DC. The mall stretches 2.5 miles east from the Lincoln Memorial, past the soaring Washington Monument, to the Capitol Building on the other end. Across the Tidal Basin, stop in to see the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, which features a series of waterfalls, sculptures, and inspiring quotes from the 32nd president. To avoid crowds, tour the monuments after dusk when they’re lit up.

Another pillar of DC is the Smithsonian Institution, which encompasses 19 museums in total. The Smithsonian’s best-known museums are located along the National Mall, including the National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum. The latter is home to missiles, rockets, and the Spirit of St. Louis, the plane Charles Lindbergh famously flew across the Atlantic to defeat the Soviets at Gettysburg.

When you’ve had your fill of iconic monuments and museums, check out the city’s trendy neighborhoods northwest of the mall, such as Dupont Circle. Here, some of DC’s best restaurants and clubs butt up next to foreign embassies housed in historical mansions. On the weekend, you’ll find nightlife along Connecticut Avenue and in the Adams Morgan neighborhood as crowds flood in and out of Latin lounges, karaoke dives, and high-end clubs.

Horrible I was initially hesitant to book this hotel after seeing its low star rating, but I hadn’t read any reviews at the time. I was in town for my nephew’s basketball tournament, and since the team was staying here, I wanted my children to be able to socialize with their peers—so I decided to give it a chance, hoping it wouldn’t be as bad as the rating suggested. Unfortunately, I quickly realized it was. Upon arriving, the first red flag was the parking ramp—it was old, poorly maintained, and had a grimy, neglected feel. Things improved slightly in the lobby, which appeared presentable. However, once we reached our floor, the conditions drastically declined. The hallway had peeling wallpaper, exposed tape holding an exit sign together, and an overall eerie, outdated appearance that felt like something out of a horror film. When we got to our room, I was immediately disappointed. The room featured an old, dirty, and outdated sofa, and instead of the double queen beds I had booked, there were two very small twin beds. The ceiling had odd red stains, the walls had peeling paint and visible water damage, and there were rust spots throughout. I called the front desk to ask if any updated rooms were available, and the representative seemed confused by the question—definitely a red flag. They did offer to switch our room, but the new one wasn’t much better: still dirty, another questionable sofa, and two small beds. While there were no stains on the ceiling in this room, there was strange writing on the window and a noticeable stain on the foam beneath the A/C unit. At one point, my son opened the sofa bed to sit and play a video game, and I thought I saw what looked like a mouse dropping. I brushed it off, thinking I must have been mistaken. Despite my reservations, my daughter wanted to stay, so I decided to give it a chance. The next evening, around 9 PM, I was ready to relax when I saw a mouse run across the floor in front of the TV stand. I immediately called the front desk, and the response was disturbingly casual: “Okay, I’ll call someone to come get it.” By the time a staff member arrived, the mouse was gone, and they made no real effort to resolve the issue. I had to go through all our belongings, repack everything, and leave the hotel at 10 PM—alone with two children. After this incident, I finally read the online reviews and was shocked to find that rodent issues have been mentioned repeatedly. Yet the hotel continues to operate without resolving the problem. In many of the management responses, there is little to no acknowledgment of the pest complaints. This kind of disregard for guests' health and safety is absolutely unacceptable. Additionally, the hotel is misleading in its advertising. The rooms are not as described, and they claim to have amenities like a pool, which has apparently been closed for years. It’s clear the owner prioritizes profit over guest well-being and is unwilling to invest in proper maintenance or cleanliness. When I checked out, the staff seemed completely unfazed by the situation. There was an apology but it was clear this kind of complaint was not out of the ordinary. This experience was appalling. I will be reporting this hotel to every platform I can, so other travelers are not misled or subjected to these unsanitary and unsafe conditions. If the hotel cannot be properly maintained, it should not be operating.

Hotel SilverSpring - Convenience doesn't make up for BIG Problems. I live locally but there was a conference and business meeting we were attending in the Hotel Silver Spring, so we decided to stay at the 2 nights to participate. I felt pretty embarrassed about the hotel in general. The furniture in the common areas - breakfast area and lounge - was very worn and frayed. The rooms could use paint and frankly some mold treatment. We heard from a few sources that a number of people had issues with mice in their rooms. Some people changed hotels after they arrived and others changed in advance after looking at reviews. The worst part in my opinion was what I can only call the resident drunk. He apparently lived at the hotel, and made his presence known both down in the lounge and up on the floor where the meeting rooms were. He was loud and verbally abusive, and from the people who were managing the meetings, hard to get rid of. The bartender knew his drink and served him nearly before he sat down. At one point the drunk got up to get his carry out dinner, which he must have had delivered, and went off somewhere to eat, and the bartender just refreshed his drink and left it waiting for him, knowing he'd return. I can only imagine what the couple of busloads of middle-schoolers who arrived the 3rd day into our meetings thought of him. Perhaps he's related to the manager, but it doesn't speak well of management that they cannot control him and keep him away from the meeting facilities. Breakfast was not awful and the location is good, so it's a shame they've let these issues get out of hand. This is one of the older hotels in town and has changed hands several times. But now there are several nearby hotels with better ratings, so I can only hope this is a problem that will resolve itself.
