Portland, Oregon: Quirky Riverfront City Known for Its City Parks

Extensive bikeways, edgy chefs, indie-rock bands, and progressive environmentalists—counterculture is almost a way of life in Portland. And it’s certainly a source of civic pride. Locals have adopted the slogan “Keep Portland Weird,” which is brandished on bumper stickers and in businesses all over the town. The city has always been a little ahead of its time; it was originally planned with strict urban-growth boundaries that left plenty of room for parks and other green spaces. Today, in new developments, shops are built at street level with apartments above them—following a European model that complements Portland’s slightly European, laid-back atmosphere.

The downtown area is a refreshing mix of the traditional and the offbeat: high-rise buildings are interspersed with clothing boutiques and restaurants serving sustainable cuisine. Streets here are narrow and the blocks are compact to encourage walking, which visitors are wont to do to take in the parks, plazas, and fountains. A popular place to hang out is Pioneer Courthouse Square, a 40,000-square-foot public space often referred to as “Portland’s living room.” In warmer months, the square hosts free shows and festivals, as does Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park, which was named 1 of 10 Great Public Spaces in America in 2012 by the American Planning Association.

My new go to hotel in Portland, the hotel is amazing from check in to check out. The staff are friendly, professional and knowledgeable. This hotel isn't your typical cookie cutter hotel, it's unique and funky. All with being impeccably clean. Rooms are spacious with flare. Although Portland has it's issues, the Vance is in a nice area and I felt very safe. I highly recommend Hotel Vance. I will stay there next trip.

It was in a great location. Walking distance to everything! Parking being included is huge since it’s $45 per night! Also comfy beds, cool rooms. And loved the table shuffleboard in the lounge.

Not my style---cold, industrial, dark, but best bed!!! My rating is biased on my taste. The hotel, which had been called "Red", retains the coldness of the previous hotel's decor. They were going for the "cool industrial" vibe. Unfortunately, in the dreariness of winter especially, this means a cold, dark, and uninviting room, and stark. I had 2 issues while there, both resolved quickly. One was related to cleanliness and the other to a non-functioning item in the room. The bed, however, was really one of the more comfortable beds I've slept in in a hotel. VERY nice, though the sheets don't "fit" properly. Confused with that one. My bottom sheet was on sideways somehow, so I flipped that. The top sheet, well, if I turned it, then lengthwise, it'd have been long, but then, no coverage on the sides at all. Turned the way it was, if you wanted to foot end tucked under mattress, couldn't then have the sheet up to your neck while in bed. Weird. The lobby...I feel sorry for the folks needing to be at the desk. It's sort of a rollaway desk at the front door. Very temporary looking. There is a cozy seating area on the 2nd floor. But, again, the rooms were stark, and dark. Perhaps in the middle of summer during a heat wave in Portland, they'd be OK. The staff I encountered were all great.

Poor Marriott Hotel would not recommend Checkin was terrible! The front desk lady does not want to be there and is too busy watching her phone. No service even for Bonvoy members. Bathroom towel had a black pube hair on top of it. The room smelled like clorox. 50 for parking! People leaving good reviews must have a really low bar or never actually travel I would not recommend

Nice modern Hotel This is a very modern hotel that is attached to the Broadway tower. I found it to be very clean and using my AAA discount a reasonably priced hotel for a weekend night. Parking will cost you at $50 a night though so it does increase your overnight stay to around $200 which isn’t bad for a downtown Portland hotel. It’s right by the lovely Park blocks of PSU and therefore it was quite cool during a hot. In Portland because of all the tree canopy. It does have a charging station which most hotels do not so that was an added bonus. I will definitely stay here again because of the cost even though it is $50 for parking. The workout room was sufficient for me and they have a nice sitting room on the second floor if you want to go and sit and look out onto the street.
