San Diego’s Shelter Island: Marinas and Yachts on San Diego Bay

Marinas and yachts dot the horizon in San Diego’s Shelter Island, a small strip of land that stretches into San Diego Bay off the coast of Point Loma. It’s one of the city’s major boating zones, where you can catch sailing or fishing charters that seek out yellowtail and albacore tuna, halibut, and dorado in the deep waters of the Pacific. Shoreline Park runs the entire 1-mile length of the neighborhood; head here to stroll a promenade overlooking the bay, drop your line from the public fishing pier, and gaze at public art installations that include a bronze bell gifted in 1958 by San Diego’s sister city of Yokohama, Japan.

Just across the bay, San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is arguably the trendiest listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The area forms both the historic center of town and a hub of nightlife, with nearly 100 Victorian-era buildings occupied by high-end boutiques, jewelers, and gourmet restaurants. A couple of miles away, the city’s iconic Balboa Park contains 17 museums, as well as the world-famous and much-beloved San Diego Zoo. Be sure to visit the Spanish Village Art Center while you’re here—the living gallery hosts local artists who produce pottery, handblown glass, and oil paintings for sale.

Tropical Marina Gorgeous Wedding Venue We had our dream wedding thanks to Humphrey’s. As soon as we toured the concert lawn venue, we knew that it was special! It is a tropical paradise here in San Diego, with so much to offer! Our wedding was magical, with hints of tropics, palm trees, a marina backdrop, incredible food, and a spacious stage for our band. Everything was flawless, and the staff went above and beyond to ensure our wedding was perfect. Our event coordinator, Darla, was exceptional, providing outstanding service throughout the planning process. We had so many compliments from our guests about the cocktail hour on the green and the reception on the concert lawn, making our outdoor wedding a stunning reality. We also enjoyed a hotel stay at Humphrey’s Half Moon Inn, which was equally fantastic. Our suite overlooked the marina, and we took full advantage of the pool, Jacuzzi, and delightful breakfast at the restaurant. We truly can’t wait to return for a concert experience or hotel stay!

Loud music every night! DON'T STAY HERE UNLESS YOU BOOK A SUITE! 3 out of 4 nights of our stay, we endured loud music that you could hear clearly even with ear plugs in, until 10:30 each night. We paid, on average, $550 US a night and ended up in a room (2 queen beds) that was in a building separate from the rest of the hotel, overlooking the outdoor concert venue. We complained immeditaly when they showed us where the room was, but they told us it was the only room available (we booked 3 months in advance and checked in at noon, we'll before the designated check in time). We had to sign a waiver because this building is not really part of the hotel and they wanted to make sure we wouldn't sneak people into the concerts. In addition, we were cut off from the pool and the rest of the hotel each afternoon and night because of security for the show set up. Not exactly the relaxing family holiday we had planned. The only waybi can see to avoid this is by booking a larger room as that building only had the smaller rooms in it. And the only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is that it is a nice hotel if you aren't stuck in the room we were in.
