San Francisco’s Union Square: Luxury Shopping District with Broadway Shows

Union Square is where San Franciscans go to find their coolest threads. The Square, which has grown to include several surrounding blocks, houses one of the country’s densest concentrations of department stores and upscale boutiques. Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Macy’s anchor its namesake plaza, and smaller boutiques are tucked along narrow alleyways. Shoppers can sift through vintage books at family-owned antique shops and admire iconic French fashion labels on the pedestrian-only Maiden Lane.

Union Square is also famous for its eclectic arts scene. The American Conservatory Theater produces Tony Award–winning dramas and comedies in a gorgeous Beaux Arts building. A handful of art galleries and museums—most notably the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art—display renowned works from artists such as Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol, and Edward Hopper.

OPERA LOCATION PLUS A quirky hotel, feels old-fashioned but is well appointed and very, very comfortable. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and make you feel welcome. The rooms are comfortable with a good bathroom and great bed. The hotel is close to all the big theatres and the Hayes Valley cafe/restaurant area. Two blocks to the Magic Flute made this a wonderful stay. The restaurant is closed currently but during a previous visit breakfast was an incredibly social, musical affair! Opens again next year.

We had a perfect stay! The hotel is small but the decor is gorgeous! Our room had everything we needed. Paris at the front desk was wonderful. He suggested a French Bistro for lunch that was excellent. When we returned from an afternoon of walking and exploring, we mentioned that we were planning to open a bottle of wine. Paris suggested we enjoy it in the lounge where he lit the fireplace, got glasses and an opener for us and even provided chocolate chip cookies. We just felt so welcomed and can't wait to stay again. Thank you Inn at the Opera!

Wonderful couple weekend getaway We won a 2 night stay via BARTable.com at this lovely little hotel which is right behind San Francisco's Opera and Symphony Halls. We had such a great time. The lobby and our room were both perfectly appointed. Everything was immaculate. The staff at the front desk were all upbeat and efficient. This is an excellent location. We went to dinner at the Matterhorn (Van Ness and Vallejo) for a lovely fondue dinner and just had to hop a bus for about 10 minutes. I would recommend this hotel for both Bay Area folks looking for a fun stay-cation spot or to out of towners. The Inn is adjacent to Hayes Valley which has lots of great dining options and other fun things to do.

A European experience in downtown San Francisco The perfect place to stay if you are going to the Opera, the Ballet, the Symphony, SF Jazz... reasonably priced for San Francisco, and adjacent to a TON to good restaurants in Hayes Valley. European-style hotel, minimal lobby, no gym, no restaurant. Just nice rooms and a great bed.
