Brunswick, Georgia: Small Coastal Town Carved by Rivers

Brunswick—set on Georgia’s southeastern coast—counts only about 15,000 people among its population, but there’s certainly no lack of things to do. Since the city is bordered by the Atlantic and threaded by the East, Turtle, and Brunswick Rivers, the action here tends to center on the water. Check out Blythe Island Regional Park, a 1,100-acre preserve with a freshwater swimming lake, fishing holes, and a playground. For some historical perspective, visit the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site and take a guided tour to see the antebellum mansion’s 18th- and 19th-century silver and antique furnishings.

Brunswick is home to two of the only three public-accessible beaches in Georgia. Nearby Jekyll Island, accessible by the causeway from Brunswick, has 10 miles of natural beaches. At the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, you can see staff members and volunteers working to rehabilitate endangered turtles so they can return to the wild. Much more wildlife lives in the isle’s inland marshes, too, including many seabirds. On the more civilized side of things, the island has an impressive historic district with 19th- and 20th-century mansions, as well as a water park and golf course.
