Mammoth Lakes, California: Outdoor Sports and Hot Springs in the Sierra Nevada

Mammoth Lakes is a quiet California town high up in the Sierra Nevada mountains southeast of Yosemite National Park. It’s the main gateway to Mammoth Mountain resort, which is just a 10-minute drive from the center of town. The resort is home to the highest golf course in California and Mammoth Mountain Bike Park, which Outside magazine named the best bike park in the United States.

Though Mammoth Lakes is a natural playground for skiers and snowboarders, it’s a popular destination for fishing and hiking in warmer months. Convict Lake is well known for its mountain vistas and abundance of rainbow trout. The lake is circled by an easy 3-mile hiking path that reveals the mountains from all perspectives. The area’s geothermal activity supports a number of natural hot springs, which are great places to unwind after a day of exploring the wilderness.

It was our first time going to mammoth and I found this resort through Groupon. I was impressed !! Our place was loaded with all we needed in the kitchen! From a coffeemaker, knives & cutting board, utensils, spices, literally everything you need to cook & make drinks. Will definitely be coming back to this resort. Very clean.

Not great for disabled guest Overall, the room was very comfortable. We loved the balcony and the view of the mountains--BEAUTIFUL. Having the kitchenette with a refrigerator and coffee maker (with coffee grounds and powdered creamer/sugar) was very nice. However, the one downside was where my ADA room was located. It was the farthest room away from the elevator. It was a VERY LONG WALK for a DISABLED person to make. I only had my cane, but I really needed my walker to make the long journey to and from the room to the lobby & parking garage.

Dated and run down Have to agree with a previous review the property is very dated & is in need of a refurb . It is more suited to the winter as it’s a ski resort , we stupidly didn’t query if there was air con it was very uncomfortable in July trying to sleep. They did provide one fan which we didn’t use due to noise . There isn’t a bar to buy a drink or any type of vending machine here . Thankfully we were only here for one night and that was enough

Stay away from here during the summer! No A/C I stayed at Juniper Springs Lodge over the 4th of July weekend, and I regret my decision. This lodge is clearly designed for winter stays, with ski lifts conveniently located next to the hotel and features tailored for cold weather. However, in the summer heat, it was unbearable. The lodge is old and rundown. The carpets are falling apart, the refrigerator compressor is extremely loud, and the furniture is chipped and scratched. Worst of all, there is no air conditioning, and the room stayed hot through the night. The windows barely open, and there are so many mosquitoes that we couldn't open the patio door. Our room overlooked the lift tent and equipment alley, which produced a constant humming sound. Additionally, the location is 1 mile away from town, where all the restaurants and activities are. It is unfair to accept summer reservations without disclosing these details. I would not recommend staying here in the summer. Very disappointing 4th of July experience.
