Property at a Glance: Lake Creek Lodge
Lake Creek Lodge has remained as a quiet escape on the shores of the Metolius River since the 1920s. Its main appeal hasn’t changed much since then: Follow in the footsteps of its early guests by fly-fishing for rainbow trout and hiking in the surrounding forest. The main lodge and some of the cabins are original to the property, though they’ve since been updated. All cabins feature full kitchens and bathrooms, and many have large decks and gas or wood-burning fireplaces.
- Play ping-pong and foosball in the recreation room, along with a pool table and board games.
- Warm up by the fire in the great room and peruse the lodge’s historical photo album.
- Grab a cup o’ joe in the Espresso Cafe. Open 7 days a week and serves pastries. Soups are available daily in the dining room.
- Never miss a meal at the onsite restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner (dinner is served family style by reservation).
- Pet-friendly amenities: a blanket, towel, dish, and doggie bags
Camp Sherman, Oregon: Fly-Fishing and Hiking in Central Oregon
The Metolius River burbles through the center of Camp Sherman, a rural community tucked away in the Deschutes National Forest. Its chilly waters are home to some of the best fly-fishing in the state—toss a line in and you might hook rainbow trout, whitefish, or kokanee salmon. You’ll find these same fish on display, along with countless others, at the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery a few miles up the road.
Venture deep into the Deschutes National Forest for even more outdoor recreation. Hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails wend through coniferous and sub-alpine forests. Trek a portion of the 100-mile-long Metolius-Windigo Trail—the trail picks up in the nearby town of Sisters—and look out for the mule deer, coyotes, and migratory birds that call the national forest home. During the warmer months, you may also spot some of the park’s signature flora, much of which bears evocative names such as zigzag groundsmoke, harsh paintbrush, and primrose monkeyflower.
