More than a century ago, Delavan blossomed into a circus headquarters where dozens of trapeze artists, contortionists, clowns, and exotic animals were based, including those who performed in P.T. Barnum’s legendary Greatest Show on Earth. Tower Park pays homage to this history with colorful statues of giraffes, elephants, and other animals.
Delavan’s early days live on through Greek Revival architecture dating back to the mid-1800s. Notable buildings include the Allyn Mansion and the Israel Stowell Temperance House. The quaint downtown district features several antique stores and small cafes amid old-fashioned lampposts and brick-paved walkways.
Only about 10 miles away is Lake Geneva, which has become one of the Midwest’s most popular destinations for recreation. Geneva Lake—a gaping gulf of fresh water ripe for swimming, leisurely sails, water skiing, and tubing—is the resort town’s biggest draw in the summer. Admire the scenery by taking a stroll on the Geneva Lake Shore Path, a 21-mile walkway planned by early settlers that stretches around the entire lake. Along the way, you’ll pass expansive gardens and the opulent estates that helped the town earn the nickname “Newport of the West.”
