South Lake Tahoe, California: Year-Round Haven for Outdoor Adventures and Late-Night Revelry

Lake Tahoe has no real off-season; people find ways to make use of its pristine water, beaches, and mountains all year long. In the summer, the lake’s clear, freshwater surface—which straddles the California-Nevada border—is dotted with swimmers, boaters, and jet skiers. Several ski resorts typically stay open from November to April, and Emerald Bay State Park is accessible year-round. A moderately easy hike to the base of Lower Eagle Falls reveals breathtaking views of the waterfalls crashing down from above.

Spectators gather at night for South Lake Tahoe’s events, which range from wine and food festivals to rock concerts and fireworks displays. A few miles northwest of South Lake Tahoe sits Stateline, Nevada, where a handful of casinos host high-stakes games of blackjack and solitaire.

Eek, a BED BUG! First impressions of this hotel were pretty good. My husband checked the beds for bedbugs as he always does before we started bringing our luggage into the room. Everything looked very clean and he was satisfied so he began to unload the car while I began getting our young children ready for bed. Before turning on the water to run a bath, I noticed something in the tub so I picked it up with a tissue. It was a BED BUG. Alive and well. Trying not to panic, my husband put it in a cup and brought it down to reception. They apologized, gave us a new room and that was pretty much the end of it. Housekeeping stopped by the next day to apologize, but that was it. Finding a bed a live bed bug is no joke and I certainly would have expected some sort of acknowledgement from management. There was not even an offer of any sort of compensation, no dinner coupon. NOTHING. At checkout my husband said he felt we should be compensated for our troubles and they did give us a small refund. But really, we should not have had to ask. We tried to make the best of our stay, but getting past the bed bug and the worry about bringing anything home with us was difficult. Once we did get home, we spent days cleaning everything. I mean, everything. We emptied out the entire car, including car seats and slowly heat treated it all. We had to purchase a heat box designed to kill bed bugs and anything that couldn't take the heat was thrown away. So people, please, always check for bed bugs. Don't trust any hotel to be bug-free, not even the Hilton.

Beautiful adventure Centrally locate with beautiful, comfortable rooms. Easy to hit the slopes or cruse the lake. Property is spacious with beautiful views. The staff was very accommodating and the property has its own restaurant and bar as well as an indoor out door pool.

Lake Tahoe vacation club by Hilton Timeshare hook staff and event promoters were less than truthful and follow through was not good. Location is stellar and the rooms are in excellent condition and very clean. Housekeeping was hardly ever seen or noticed but amenities were sufficient.
