San Marcos, California: Quiet Historical Town with Popular Breweries

San Marcos is less than an hour from downtown San Diego, making it a quick day trip from such family-friendly attractions as Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo, which is home to thousands of animals, including rare giant pandas.

Though it’s close to San Diego, San Marcos is a relatively quiet college town (home to a California State University campus and the University of St. Augustine) situated in a valley surrounded by rolling green hills. For dinner, browse Old California Restaurant Row, which is lined with more than a dozen old-fashioned saloons and restaurants that serve Thai, Indian, and teppanyaki-style Japanese cuisine. Restaurant Row also hosts a seasonal hot-rod car show. You can also visit popular breweries such as Stone Brewing Co. for tours and beer samples.

Great stay, kids had a blast. I was happy to see that actual pictures were what we saw at the resort. One downside is it has a lot of young kids which is not a bad thing, just customer service may take a moment. but I used that to say hey i’m on vacation relax. I will return, was such an excitable time with kids. loved everything about it! Kayaking, platoon boat rental, s’mores, salt water pools

Perfect Lake San Marcos Lodging Wonderful, comfortable, and clean lodging- it was perfect for our family and our activities. Our room had a view of the lake on the first floor and we could sit in the back and watch the birds, boats, and people go by. A very relaxing experience.

Couldn't Have Asked for More. It was an unexpected experience with everything catered toward the guest. The hotel staff were wonderful and accommodating. The place was clean, quiet, loved the lake view. Upstairs is the better view if you can get it. We also went by the fire and made smores. It was fun. Great place for winter. Great breakfast at their local restaurant and wonderful local coffee at the on-site location.

Great location This was the second time we stayed here. It seemed a little run down (furniture dented, carpet peeling etc.) It is a great location though and they do have unique perks like s’mores kits and basket of ball’s for the range. It was also Christmas time so they had a winter wonderland area which was neat.
