Hotel at a Glance: Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square

The Marriott stands as one of Lancaster’s tallest buildings, but its ties to local history aren’t just about height. The hotel’s tower incorporates the Beaux Arts façade of the Watt & Shand department store, a fixture in downtown Lancaster from the late 1800s to 1992. Going even further back in time, a site in the adjacent Lancaster County Convention Center is thought to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad.

  • Upscale dining: Penn Square Grille’s menu ranges from small plates like crab fondue to steaks and pork-belly pizza.
  • Best way to relax: swimming in the heated indoor pool
  • Open 24/7: a fitness center with cardio equipment and free weights
  • Walkable location: The hotel is close to restaurants and art galleries, as well as other historic landmarks.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania: Crossroads of Amish Culture and German Heritage

Lancaster County sits in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. A number of Amish families—many of them descendants of the German immigrants who settled in the region in the 18th and 19th centuries—still farm the land here, living and working by the same timeless principles and unadorned methods they’ve been using for generations. On a drive through the area, you’ll see covered bridges spanning the Conestoga River and probably share the road with a horse-drawn buggy or two. At stops such as Kitchen Kettle Village, you can watch experts canning jellies, jams, and relishes and sample homemade baked goods.

To tour the countryside in style, take a ride aboard a coal-burning steam locomotive on the Strasburg Rail Road. As the train chugs past farmers tending fields and cattle grazing on hay and strudel, parlor-car attendants serve cocktails and snacks to passengers in the dining car or in first class. Across the street from the station in Strasburg, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania chronicles the history of the track via rotating exhibits and more than 100 locomotives and railcars.

Get it together Marriott First, the website says there is room service at this hotel. There is not. We found this out after an eight hour drive, called downstairs and were told that there had been no room service in over a year. (As of my writing this, the website STILL says there is room service. ) Second, unless you want a re-heated Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich, there is no hot breakfast option at this hotel on weekdays. You have to leave the hotel to get something to eat, not fun in the rain. Third, they need to do something about the parking situation. You get a card that is supposed to get you back into the garage and it only worked half the time, we had to replace our card multiple times and could not get out of the garage, with a line of cars behind us. A waste of time and extremely frustrating. Fourth, there is no self-serve laundry room at this hotel. I was told I could leave laundry with the front desk, I told them I would need it back by 10am the next day (it was a baseball uniform for my kid's game). Went down a little after 10 the next morning and it wasn't ready. It was brought to our room a little after 11 and there were items missing, including his game socks. At 11:30am, I gave the front desk a list of what was missing. I went back down tonight to follow up, the items are still missing. For the price of this hotel, I expected more.

Great accomodations in quirky, diverse and walkable downtown I've stayed in this hotel twice in 2021, and thoroughly enjoyed each visit. It's a beautiful hotel with a marvelous restaurant (indulged in meal of small plates that fit our budget and filled our bellies) and conference facilities. Our room was clean, and comfortable, and the lobby area is a great place to relax. Check-in was easy, and staff was great. Downtown Lancaster is a fun place to explore, full of great restaurants and historical buildings. The tower/elevator arrangement and parking are a little inconvenient, but very minor in the overall experience.

Good overnight stay We stayed here only night. This was a very nice hotel. The hotel was clean, and room was nice. We did not partake in any amenities. Parking is in the garage at $20/night. It is a hike from the parking to your room.

Very nice hotel PROS- The hotel is very nice and centrally located. You can walk to Central Market across the street. It's about a 15-20 minute drive to Amish Country, Lancaster. The hotel was clean and the beds, pillows, towels are very comfortable. The front desk employees were very friendly. CONS- There is no free breakfast included. There is a buffet in the morning for 18.95 which did not look overly extensive. The Plough restaurant in the hotel has a big sign out front that they open for brunch at 10. This was our plan. They did not open until 11. We did wait and pack out in the meantime, and were seated at 11. The place was empty the entire hour we were there. One of the guys there chastised the host and said no more walk ins. So they were telling everyone they were full for reservations. (Restaurant was still empty with like 3 couples in the entire restaurant) They clearly could have taken some of these folks. The bill with 2 breakfast and 2 teas with tip was over $50. There is no free parking. You pay $20 + tax to park. You have to swap out your parking ticket at the desk when you come in in order to be able to come and go throughout the day. The roof top bar is very nice. As others have said in their reviews, it's very hard to find. It's not actually accessible from inside the hotel. You walk out the lobby and turn right. Walk until you see a door that has "TE" on it. Go in and ride the elevator up. Same issue here... you can't sit outside because "people have reservations". Many open seats. Sat inside for a long time and watched this debacle. We addressed the guy again and then he let us sit outside. No one new even came in that evening. (We stayed until last call) You have to scan your hotel card in the elevator to get to your floor. It got to be quite comical every time we got in the elevator with ourselves and other guests frantically trying to get these cards to work with the elevator. Everyone was having issues with this. It is a very nice hotel. But figure your add-ons (which are not typical for Marriott's we have stayed at) for parking and breakfast when you see your room rate.

Needs help The hotel is very nice and the staff was great but they have issues. The rooms on the east tower has inadequate lighting. The breakfast area is too small for the number of guest. I had to wait up to 20min to sit down and eat (they have larger space they could use) Only one elevator working is a problem was a problem especially during this COVID event. You had to wait a while to get an elevator and since there's a trust system in this hotel that says vaccinated folks don't need a mask and un-vaccinated strongly encouraged to wear noone was wearing masks. Now I could assume all were vaccinated but I'd be a fool to believe that. M-Club was closed only offered breakfast which wasn't that great.
