Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Waterfalls, Beaches, and Centuries-Old Historical Sites

Situated on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is best known for its sun-kissed beaches. But the province has several breathtaking geographical features inland as well. Damajagua is a natural water park of sorts—it features 27 waterfalls flowing from limestone formations. Tour guides lead groups through the falls, and you can swim and occasionally slide down the natural water slides.

You can get an aerial view of Puerto Plata and the Caribbean Sea on a teleférico, or cable car. One of them climbs 2,565 feet to the apex of Mount Isabel de Torres, which is crowned with botanical gardens and a replica of Rio de Janeiro's massive Christ the Redeemer statue. Take a scenic drive to Parque Histórico La Isabela and you'll find the remains of a church as well as the ruins of a colonial village.

We had an amazing time. The people were very friendly and professional. The VIP access was amazing. We got served food and drinks and didn’t have to get them ourselves. We also had access to the VIP pool which was very private. The beach was wonderful as well as we were VIP guess and had beds on the beach.

Trip to Celebrate my Wife’s 50th Birthday was amazing! This resort was amazing from the moment we stepped foot on property. There were just a couple of small issues but overall was amazing. Check in process was so smooth and quick. Our resort room was clean and had a lush view of a pool and could see the ocean through the trees. The food was a 10/10. We ate at the breakfast buffet at Casablanca every morning and it never disappoints. We had 2 ala carte dining experiences. We went to a Brazilian steakhouse which was good but our Italian food at Bellini’s was out of this world. My wife got the risotto with shrimp and I got one of the best pieces of lasagna ever. It was also nice to eat lunch by the beach on the cabanas. Super convenient! We never had an issue with getting a drink however it is much more crowded during the weekends so be prepared for that. The staff said that a lot of locals come in for the weekend. During the week, it was so nice and comfortable with the crowd level. The staff every where was so gracious and accommodating. Especially Pamela and Fernando in the cabana area. The cabana area had to be our favorite. Clean cabanas with great views of the ocean and small pools you could cool off in. We met so many great people while hanging out in our cabana. Servers come around and get your food and drink orders. The beach was really nice and had some good waves but I was hoping for some clearer water to snorkel. This resort is so big and you feel safe while here. 10/10 for a relaxing trip for adults! I think teens might get bored though. A lot to do for little kids. There are excursion opportunities that you can choose from. We talked to a couple that said their snorkel trip was amazing! Now to the opportunity areas. You will try to be sold on their timeshare even if you came with another timeshare company so be prepared for this. Our guy (Juan) was nice we told him no from the get go and he let us leave after an hour. Until he showed back at our cabana on the beach saying I had to go speak with the manager which was inconvenient. But I said no and we didn’t have to deal with this again. We heard very similar stories from everyone else we talked to so he prepared for this. Our power went out once and so did our water. Our shower water was cold most of the time but we looked past that. Overall this is an amazing resort and is a great deal for the price. I would definitely like to visit this resort again.

Spa Services are Amazing This review is for the Spa only. During a Mom and Me trip we were approached at the cabanas for spa services. Mom and I booked massages for later that afternoon. We arrived and had extra time to grab a smoothie at the bar and lounge at the pool. There were only 2 others out there. It was tranquil. We then met our masseuses Kany Rodriguez and Genecis Encarnacion. They explained everything and went over our health forms and listened to our wishes. Mom, who is in her 80's, and I massaged together in a couple's room. We should have done longer than the 30 minutes. Our massages were so good. I felt like butter after mine. My mom said her masseuse had hands of God. She is arthritis ridden and it just what she needed to feel relaxed and have the knots worked out in her shoulders. I felt listened to regarding to pressure and the areas I need some work on. After our massage I took a dip in the hot tub inside the locker room. I could have stayed longer but we had dinner reservations. I highly recommend booking services during your stay. I had read reviews that the spa was good it just wasn't at the top of my list. I'm so glad they came around to the cabanas. Otherwise I would have missed this opportunity that really elevated our stay.

Great experience and helpful employees! This is the third time my family has come to the resort and it’s always a fun time. They have a lot of entertainment and many different pools. The resort is big which is great because you have a lot of options for what you would like to do. They have a shuttle constantly running throughout the day to get you to different areas of the resort. They also have several restaurants that you can make reservations for and you have to book in the morning with guest services. Ashley Reyes from guest services has helped my family everyday with dinner reservations. She has been very kind and accommodating. We appreciate all her help in making our experience better at this resort. Rooms are beautiful and I love that it has a balcony. I only wish they had flatter pillows, because the ones in the room were too high for my neck but that’s just a personal preference.
