  • Whale watching: Talk to the staff about the best way to go whale watching—you might spot gray whales, humpback whales, or dolphins, depending on the season.

Pacific Grove, California: Sleepy Coastal Town Next to Monterey

The oceanfront town of Pacific Grove shares its central California peninsula with the city of Monterey, but is far more serene than its cosmopolitan neighbor. Rows of Victorian houses line the streets, deer wander through residential areas, and thousands of butterflies congregate here during their southerly migration. Travel + Leisure named Pacific Grove one of America's Best Little Beach Towns, noting that the beach is better suited for surfing and kayaking than swimming. Stroll the pathway that winds along the rocky shore, taking in the many native plants and bird colonies that make their homes on the 3-mile stretch.

Great two night get-away We travel to Monterey area often and are always look for a dog friendly place to stay. Lighthouse Lodge popped up with a special Sunday and Monday night rate. Decided to give it a try. It was a fantastic stay. The room was clean, large and a little view of the ocean from our room. The property was kept up. Had a wonderfully warm pool and hot tube. The location is quiet and close to the water. We loved it. Our dogs really loved it.

Overpriced. Looks so good at first glance, but needs a major refurbishment. I guess Pacific Grove in the middle of the summer has to go for a premium, but still... Location is fantastic. Allows you to take advantage of the Pacific Grove coastal area without needing a car. Layout (we stayed in a "cottage") was such that it was very quiet. My girls loved the in-tub jacuzzi and the deer walking by our windows. The complementary breakfast was excellent, offered scrambles and chilaquiles and omelets, not just cereal and stale bagels. Tub and bathroom counter were clean. Free parking. Wifi was slow, but on vacation. Better that way. Place needs to be upgraded. Carpet is threadbare. The sliding french doors that were supposed to turn my "upgrade" into a two bedroom cottage were broken. Fell on my face when the stair nosing crumbled. The next day my daughter almost fell face forward when the same thing happened to her as she came down the stairs--luckily I was standing two steps below waiting for my other daughter to come out of the room and I was able to catch her. Two of our window shades were broken and to get light during the day had to drape the coverings over the lamps, and one of the window cranks was broken as well. Casements were filthy, toilet area of bathroom had spiderwebs, support services were lacking. Did not like calling the front desk asking if laundry facilities were available and being told "no" and then getting hung up on without being given assistance as to where I could go to do laundry, but everyone else was nice. Overall, did not think it was worth $300 plus a night. Would stay here again if I was to pay $200 to take advantage of the location and the overall layout. If they renovate I would gladly return.
