New Orleans’s Garden District: Historic Neighborhood with Antebellum Mansions and Green Spaces

Antebellum New Orleans was a hub of international commerce thanks to its strategic position along the Mississippi River. This made it one of the country’s richest cities, and the American merchants that flocked there built elegant neoclassical mansions with two-tiered porches supported by tall white columns. Today, you can still see these monuments to wealth along the oak-lined St. Charles Avenue. Take a self-guided tour aboard the vintage St. Charles streetcar, which has been running for more than 150 years. It cruises through the Garden District and downtown New Orleans before reaching the French Quarter.

A few blocks south of St. Charles Avenue lies Magazine Street, the neighborhood’s main shopping and dining zone. Named for a string of 18th-century warehouses (magasins in French), the 6-mile stretch offers some of the city’s best antiquing amid a mishmash of Greek Revival and Victorian buildings. You also might want to pay a visit to one of the many green spaces and public squares for which the Garden District was named. Coliseum Square, a particularly lush spot, is lined with concrete walking trails leading to a central fountain.

This is my second time staying here. I really enjoy the stay here. The staff is great friendly and great customer service. I also love the fact that you can get on the street cars right across the street from the hotel. I recommend this hotel.

Thank you During our visit to New Orleans, my daughter and I had the pleasure of staying at the Maison St. Charles, a wonderfully located hotel within close proximity to delightful restaurants and convenient public transportation options. The staff at Maison St. Charles went above and beyond to ensure our needs were met, showing a warm and welcoming attitude throughout our stay. I am particularly impressed by the exceptional service provided by Mr. Jesse. Mr. Jesse, proved to be an invaluable asset when he adeptly handled a sudden influx of guests with composure and efficiency. His remarkable display of patience, kindness, and humility left a lasting impression on us. Keep up the outstanding work!!

Untrained and unfriendly staff Nice little hotel, Rooms clean and ours looked onto the pool.Housekeeping staff were really nice. Breakfast staff did not have a friendly attitude. Older lady accused me on not putting tongs on the appropriate plate (even before I had even got to the buffet) and cut off myself and the pool man’s conversation to tell me which bin I should put the sugar wrapper in. Manager really friendly but please get your staff trained up on dealing with guests as this isn’t acceptable.

Mrs. Ursula that works the breakfast was amazing. She was by herself one day and was still so nice and made sure everyone had what they needed. She is super friendly and helpful.
