Houston, Texas: Space History and Museums in Nation’s Fourth-Largest City

As the nation’s fourth-largest city by population, Houston has established itself as one of the Gulf Coast’s most thriving cultural hubs. The city's museum district has 19 museums covering everything from history to art to science. For art lovers, the Menil Collection—which Frommer’s calls “one of the great private collections of the world”—is a must-see. Here, you’ll browse an array of 20th-century art from Jasper Johns, René Magritte, and Andy Warhol, as well as artifacts from Africa and the Pacific Islands.

You could also spend an entire day exploring Houston’s science institutions. When Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell famously stated, “Houston, we have a problem,” he was talking to mission control at Space Center Houston. Here, visitors can tour the historic mission-control room and get a behind-the-scenes look at astronauts training for the International Space Station. Along Houston’s Hermann Park, The Health Museum exhibits a large-scale human body that you can enter to learn about how your organs operate.

Reese is a Saint 5 out of 5 stars. Would let him froth my soul. I came for a latte. I left a changed person. His name?Reese. What I do know is that this barista wasn’t just serving coffee. He was serving joy, kindness, and the kind of emotional stability I’ve been chasing in therapy for three years. He greeted me with the warmth of a thousand suns. The kind of smile that makes you believe, just for a second, that maybe—just maybe—everything’s going to be okay. He asked me how my day was with such genuine interest I almost cried into my oat milk. And then. Then. He asked me for my autograph. I was confused. Flattered. Slightly unwell. Had I entered an alternate universe where I was famous? Did I look like someone important? Was he just trying to bless a napkin with my energy for later? I don’t know. But I signed it. And in that moment, I felt seen. I felt chosen. I felt like the main character. The coffee? Immaculate. Life-changing. I drank it too fast and got the shakes, but honestly it felt like a spiritual awakening. This man deserves a raise, a hug, and probably a medal of honor. 10/10

I had a great time John the bartender at license to chill was extraordinary. We ordered drinks with him the first day and visit after that he remembered without us saying a word to him. Excellent customer service. I would definitely comeback to the bar just for his service.
