Eastern Puerto Rico: Rainforests, Beaches, and Spanish Colonial History

The US commonwealth of Puerto Rico attracts mainland Americans looking for a Caribbean destination without the need for a passport. Though Puerto Rico’s small size (it’s about as large as Connecticut) makes it possible to see the whole territory in one trip, its eastern regions provide the best combination of outdoor trips and cultural activities. Nearby lies the 28,000-acre El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system. After hiking through this often-misty forest, take a short drive to the eastern coast and board a public ferry to Puerto Rico’s two less-populated islands—Vieques and Culebra. Both are well known for first-rate fishing, snorkeling, and diving waters.

Located along the island’s northeastern coast, the capital city of San Juan opens a window into Puerto Rico's Spanish colonial past with historical mansions, cathedrals, and aimlessly wandering conquistadors. The city’s historical section is called Old San Juan and was settled by the Spanish in 1521. Here, you’ll see blue-cobblestone streets, centuries-old churches, and a 42-foot wall that once protected the city. To delve into the island’s artistic culture, head to the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, which displays pieces dating back to the 17th century.

Fun and Relaxing Vacation Spot with Great Service Margaritaville Vacation Club at Wyndham Rio Mar is a great place to spend a vacation in the Caribbean by the beach. Palio's restaurant is an amazing culinary Italian experience of a 3 or 4-course meal; its hostess escorted us to our table with a smile and our waiter Nabil did a stupendous job serving our table. Roots restaurant has a wonderful breakfast buffet every morning, and also serves American food. Iguana is the local food restaurant at Margaritaville, and their dishes are tasty featuring large portions. The food at Five O'Clock is great and easy to order for taking to the beach or for eating while seated in their outdoor seating. At the beach, we enjoyed service from Joel who set up our beach chairs and umbrellas and did a wonderful job with service at the beach; Jan Michael was our beach attendant on a different day providing great service at the beach also, even took our pictures at our request and did a nice job. The views, rooms, amenities and service at Margaritaville Vacation Club at Wyndham Rio Mar are excellent. Would recommend Margaritaville Vacation Club at Wyndham Rio Marto anyone looking for a fun and relaxing vacation spot.

Puerto Rico - Rio Grande April 2024 Our family rented an entire house within the resort property. We were there for a family reunion. The house was amazing. It had seven rooms and eight bathrooms. It even had a cute apartment in the basement where my wife and I stayed and it offered us a nice privacy element. The house had all the bells and whistles including a cute pool and amazing views. The kitchen was huge as well as a the dining area having a 12 seat dining room table with a huge island for more seating space. We had some excellent family cooked meals and this area just provided a nice environment. The house since it is located within the resort also enjoyed the amenities of the hotel such as a gorgeous beach to yourself - literally - and an amazing pool as well as some fine restaurants on the property. I spent some quality time on the beach where literally there was no one close to me or around me. The property is close to several shopping places, the rain forest and close distance to two beautiful islands that every tourist should visit: Culebra (has one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world - Flamenco Beach) and Vieques. I would recommend this resort and check out some of the properties that are on the resort via VRBO or AIRBNB as they offer a little more privacy. This resort is very family friendly and you will truly enjoy the beach, the views and the peace that is experienced in this place.

Expensive but fun First the bad news. $34 per person for breakfast. $120 for family of 4. Kids eat a waffle and done. Other restaurants not too bad but they are still kind of pricey for eating at a bar. $42 for a shot and a Captain Morgan and Coke. Beers not bad price. Golf $175 + $75 club rental on a course that is not very busy. Beach - waves too rough and not allowed to swim. Logs and other debris floating in water and ending up on beach. Swim up bar no bartender, Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort had tournament but never advertised course was closed until you make plans Good things. Free laundry. $15 a day for self park. Really good entertainment in bars as well as a great magic show. Free beach chairs and umbrellas. Rooms comfortable. Pools are nice. Faculty is very nice and facility well kept. Basically this is a really nice place and I probably will be back. I am wiser now about how expensive this resort is and will be sure to use this info next trip. Will have a car on day 1 and get groceries to avoid the expensive breakfast and dinners. Go visit the kioskos where there is supposedly really good food - just limited parking. Things to do. Get up early and go to Rainforest for hiking and sight seeing. Drive down the road and go to liquilla beach. $4 for parking. $10 pp for chair. But the water is very calm, able to swim and float and enjoy a beach the way it should be enjoyed. Old San Juan is fun with lots of shops and restaurants and near the docs where you might see a cruise ship.
