Santa Barbara, California: Beach Town Nicknamed "The American Riviera"

Santa Barbara stands out among the towns along the 400-mile stretch between San Francisco and Los Angeles thanks to its prime location: it’s sandwiched between Pacific beaches to the south and the Santa Ynez Mountains to the north. It's urban, but not overly so—the downtown corridor along State Street is lined with mom-and-pop shops, cafés, bars, art galleries, and movie theaters.

A subtle Mediterranean influence graces most buildings: there are red-tile roofs, stucco façades, and Moorish-style arches. The climate is breezy and warm all year, providing an environment for lush tropical foliage to thrive. It's easy to see why the city bills itself as "The American Riviera."

Shocking organisation. Avoid. Had a confirmed booking here. They mailed to say all was confirmed. Then at 1.00 on the day we were due to arrive they cancelled. Said something about booking . Com not confirming. But they had already confirmed. It was July 4. So obviously they had another booking come in. Left us in the lurch. Impossible to get another booking at late notice. Fortunately we hadn’t left for the hotel or we really would have been stuck. Shocking behaviour. Really poor. I would avoid. We called in to collect some post that had already been sent but completely disorganised. No sign of it. No one had any clue. Just smacks of a badly run hotel.

Wonderful Hotel in Quiet Neighborhood Near the Ocean This is a marvelous hotel with an upscale feel to it that is a block from the beach and the harbor restaurants. It is quiet at night on a neighborhood street. The reception area and the rooms are cozy and well done. The pool area has several covered tables and chairs to sit outside and read or visit with your companions. Several excellent restaurants are a five minute walk away on Cabrillo. The staff is super friendly and even pop out to open the door for you when you are carrying something! They have free coffee and delicious cookies available all day. They don't serve breakfast but we went to Jeanines on Cabrillo and it was fast and delicious. They have a daily fee for parking but in the two times I've stayed here there were options to get it waived - to stay for three days the first visit and the second time to advertise your experience on social media - so check it out and see if you can avoid it. Although it has an upscale, posh, feel I found it very affordable during the week nights.

Would definitely return here- fresh, clean, quiet We were here for four nights in May - the hotel was very nice. Room was a nice size, quiet, clean. Given two complimentary drinks upon check in; good wifi strength. Bed was comfy enough, and extra pillows were delivered promptly upon request. We were given an ADA compliant room- and maybe because of it, it felt like it was missing a piece of furniture. There was a nice chair to relax in, but no side table to use as an extra desk. Also- if you were on the far side of the bed, it was a narrow walkway to walk around the bed to the bathroom. Tommy Bahama toiletries were nice, esp the pump soap to wash hands with- I appreciate that in a hotel vs a bar soap. I also liked that you could open the windows for fresh air in the room. Charging ports in alarm clock which was handy. Fully stocked mini bar with alcoholic drinks (we didn't use but it was a nice variety). Walking distance to several restaurants- recommend Chad's for breakfast! Walking to harbor and beach is super easy- two blocks or so away. Pool was nicely appointed with lots of seating, but we didn't use it- only went in the area because that is where the ice machine is located. Plenty of parking, which was great, because sometimes this was hard to find in Santa Barbara!
