Mackinac Island, Michigan: Quaint Island with Historic Attractions on Lake Huron

One of the first things you’ll notice when you arrive on Michigan’s Mackinac Island is the absence of cars—they’ve been banned since 1898. It’s part of the isle’s Victorian charm and a major draw for visitors as well as the island’s 500 permanent residents. Nestled in the strait between Michigan’s lower and upper peninsulas, Mackinac Island (pronounced “MACK-in-awe”) looks like a postcard from another century, replete with pastel-hued Victorian mansions and horse-drawn carriages. The 4-square-mile island was formerly a fur-trading and fishing outpost before it reinvented itself in the mid-19th century as a summer resort for the well heeled.

It’s incredibly scenic, too. Roughly 80\% of the island is considered Mackinac Island State Park—America’s second national park, after Yellowstone (though the park was eventually handed back to the state of Michigan). More than 70 miles of hiking trails thread through stunning boreal forest here, and a popular 8-mile bicycle path called Lake Shore Boulevard circles the island. Along the route, you’ll see one of the island’s most photographed icons, Arch Rock. The limestone formation soars nearly 150 feet into the air and offers sweeping views of Lake Huron.

My RSVP was for king bed with view. Both were ready when we arrived. The staff was great. They worked hard in a tough time making everything enjoyable. Super friendly staff. Issue when our luggage would arrive to mainland during departure. I asked the young gentleman for a supervisor. The supervisor cleared everything and luggage arrived on time to mainland. Rooms and resort are super clean!

LOOK ELSEWHERE! Long time Mackinac Island goers, first time at Mission Point. We paid $500 a night in the Straits Lodge! I believe rooms used to be dormitories for workers. Room small, one night stand in bad condition, bathroom - no counter space, standing water in tub, hot water scalding! No continental breakfast included as is the case at other lodgings on the island. For the inflated prices, better bang for the buck elsewhere! Lobby atmosphere amazing, but the room & overinflated prices not worth it.

Charming, pet friendly, part of culture of the island Knew mostly what to expect as had a 1 night stay here previously. This time was 3 nights with family. Staff are excellent (5 star)! Very friendly, personable and service oriented. Easy to get checked in accepting how spread out the facility is. Facility (sleeping rooms in Straits building) show their age. That is part of charm of Mackinac Island, but windows/doors/lack of sound proofing are not in line with this price point. You have to decide if charm offsets these inconveniences. Maybe it reflects cost of being on the island, but left me questioning value. Was surprised by # of dogs. Disclaimer: I've never been a pet owner. There were certainly more dogs than kids. Barking in the building was a bit annoying, but not problem for us while sleeping. Hotel beds are questionable enough with humans using them, didn't want to think about the dogs that possibly slept in the bed I used. If you like dogs, this place is for you. If you don't, maybe someplace else is more suitable.

Not worth the money It’s a decent place… For the money $800 a night I spent I expected waaayyy more! The rooms are old and weren’t immaculately clean. Looong walk to hotel room especially for a handicap mother. My mother went down to the restaurant in hotel to have coffee while she waited for us to finish a bike ride around the island and join her for breakfast. The wait staff had attitude seating her without everyone present. ALL tables were open except 2 at 8 am. Then they try to rush you through your prepaid meal and drop check off immediately. Breakfast Food was fair tasting if that. My mother also had a motorized scooter that I needed to figure out where to put during the night and they acted as if this had never been asked before and told me to just leave it by the door….. not helpful at All!! I will NOT be staying here again!
