Hotel at a Glance: Mount View Hotel & Spa

After exchanging their vows, newlyweds Stephanie and Michael Woods fell in love with their reception venue, Mount View Hotel & Spa in Calistoga. In fact, they were so enamored that they decided to buy the boutique hotel. From the moment you enter the hotel’s airy lobby, it’s easy to see how one could fall in love with this place. A thorough face-lift in 2007 has rejuvenated this 100-year-old dame of a hotel, which has seen its share of celebrities, including early Hollywood starlet Jean Harlow. Art-deco light fixtures hang from the tall ceilings, and funky furniture competes with retro wallpaper for attention.

  • Where you'll stay: a sleek guest room or an artist's cottage.
  • Soak up some sun by the heated pool.
  • Raise a glass of a Napa Valley wine at the onsite wine bar, Indie Blue Salon.
  • Treat yourself with a trip to the hotel's spa; services include the Deep Muscle massage or Radiant Glow facial.

Calistoga, California: Down-to-Earth Hamlet in Northern Napa Valley

The story goes like this: 19th-century developer Samuel Brannan wanted to create a West Coast version of Saratoga Springs (renowned at the time for its mineral spas), but he had been drinking when he made the announcement and so the name came out garbled as the "Calistoga of Sarifornia." This origin myth sounds a little fishy, but nevertheless, Brannan's vision of creating a relaxing-and-therapeutic Napa Valley getaway was eventually realized. Thanks to the area's natural hot springs, a slew of spas sprang up, offering restorative mineral soaks and mud baths. You can still find many such businesses peppered among the restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries lining Calistoga's quiet main street, which is set against a backdrop of rolling hills.

Those hills are home to some of Napa Valley's more than 400 wineries, many of which lie within a short drive of downtown Calistoga. The curious wine lover can choose from an array of vineyard experiences, ranging from tours to tastings at wineries modeled on English castles and Tuscan villas. One word of warning: many of these places require reservations, so be sure to book in advance.

Old fashioned Calistoga We stayed in a Cottage and it was well worth the extra money. Having a private patio with a jacuzzi and some chairs and a table outside is just delightful. There's also a roomy and quiet refrigerator and some kitchen features - a coffee making setup that I didn't use because it's basically instant coffee. But a small kitchen sink and an outlet so I made my own real coffee. They deliver a continental breakfast to your room in the morning!!! The best! The hotel is a little funky but in a good way. The hotel has character. The pool is quite nice and I loved the mineral pool. I would recommend this hotel. It checked all the boxes. I would definitely return.

Quality Experience Lovely and restful reset for the celebrating the turning of the calendar year! Particularly noteworthy is the quality of the rooms and experience with the staff. Beautifully appointed with luxurious linens and bed provided more than a good night's sleep, it was a superb night's sleep. The front desk was courteous and accommodating to my allergy sensitivities and having the complimentary continental breakfast delivered to my room at a time I chose was a nice touch. The quality and attention to detail makes this property and the staff really standout and shine. Thank you! I look forward to seeing you again soon!

Never disappoints -- heart o Calistoga with everything nearby I always stay at the Mount View Hotel & Spa with a girlfriend -- for a fun girl's getaway. It is delightful -- beautifully located in the heart of Calistoga. With shops and many restaurants nearby. The staff is always delightful! Helpful and accommodating. The services they offer are beyond a regular hotel and very thoughtful (food to be brought in, wine, etc. to buy). Their room configurations are perfect -- for two girls we each have a bedroom and a sink and then share the shower/toilet room. There is a sitting room as well. The spa is in the building so we go in our robes, and the spa treatments and inventive, unique and fabulous! As are the spa therapists. In the AM they bring coffee/tea and baked breads to your room. We go every year and will go again next December.
