Manhattan's Lower East Side: Chic Boutiques, Restaurant Row, and Contemporary-Art Galleries

If you were a German, Irish, Polish, or Jewish immigrant coming to America in pursuit of a better life in the 19th or early 20th century, odds were good that you’d wind up sharing space in an overcrowded tenement building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The neighborhood—one of the city’s oldest—was a refuge for New York’s newest and poorest residents for generations. You can learn more at the Tenement Museum, located in a five-story brick building that once housed some 7,000 working-class immigrants.

In recent years, the Lower East Side’s identity as a welcome mat for newcomers has shifted as gentrification began to reshape the neighborhood. Pushcarts and rundown storefronts have given way to trendy boutiques along Orchard Street and a chic “restaurant row” on Clinton Street. What's more, the relocation of the New Museum has attracted a slew of contemporary-art galleries. Some of the old mainstays have stuck around, though, including Katz’s Delicatessen and Russ & Daughters, which has been selling premium smoked fish, bagels, and other specialty foods since 1914.

Worst meal this century Absolute horror show, really truly I've eaten in a few bad places over the past 25 years but this will stick out as the worst of the worst. We came in after a couple of guys, we all sat at the bar. The guys were served and finished their drinks while we were still waiting for ours. The bar tender kept winking at me to flirt. Don't flirt with me sweetie, just serve me my drink. I would fire this woman. It took an hour to get served. Meanwhile you're subjected to awful music blared at level 10. We tried to order food. We had to ask four different people where our drinks were, where our food was, after being there for an hour. When the food finally arrived it was cheap and poorly presented. McDonald's level for three figure prices. This is for posers and tourists. Really sad. I came here a number of years ago and had a great time. Now I would gladly stand at the door and warn people away.

Find a different hotel Awful. Blood on the pillows/sheets, pull out couch broken so my kids didn’t fit, remote for the tv didn’t work, and the charger next to my bed didn’t work. When I called down I got nothing but attitude and the man who brought another remote was incredibly rude. It was to the point I stopped calling the front desk and sucked it up because I felt like I was being such an inconvenience to them. Won’t be staying there again.

Great stay in Soho The hotel is situated. The rooms were quiet, given it's Manhattan! Our bed was really big and very comfy. The head boards are in need of some TLC or replacing as the material is flaking off and also the curtains. We had amazing views and could watch the sun rise over Manhattan from bed. We didn't eat in the restaurant but did have a few drinks in the lovely bar restaurant. I would recommend this hotel. Istayed here 12 years ago and it is becoming somewhat worn and in need of TLC but otherwise excellent with friendly and helpful staff.
