Mendocino Coast, California: Small Towns Along Scenic Oceanfront and Redwood Forests

Northern California’s Mendocino Coast is a region of tiny towns and art colonies with varied terrain. Within a few minutes of one another are sunlit valleys, fertile vineyards, rocky headlands blanketed by fog, and serene forests of old-growth redwoods. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens showcase the area’s geographical diversity through prickly succulents and colorful blooms stretching to the ocean.

Partially because of its scenic land and sea scapes, the coast is popular with painters, who gather in artists’ collectives such as the Mendocino Art Center. Visitors can see the land that inspires local artwork by heading to any of the region’s coastal state parks. At Mendocino Headlands State Park, waves crash into grottos and stony bluffs, and MacKerricher State Park has dramatic sand dunes.

This was definitely worth it! Great room and location and the restaurant is delicious. The only misleading information was the groupon ad stated free breakfast. It is not free but worth the price.

Impeccable. Immaculate. Old world craftsmanship. It was with great regret that I read some negative reviews for Noyo Harbor Inn (NHI). Fortunately we found only lovely customer service, excellent lodging, and delectable food and drink. All encounters with staff were favorable, and each was willing to kindly go out of their way to accommodate us. The meals were delicious, and the cocktails at the bar were skillfully crafted from quality ingredients. The really exceptional thing about NHI however is the state of the building and grounds. They are immaculate. If you are a person who pays attention to the small details of fit, finish, trim, and maintenance, you will stand in awe of the grounds and Inn itself. It is an older building but has clearly been painstakingly refreshed recently. The back story is that the facility dates from lumber baron days, but as you stroll the halls you will look upon trim work and finish carpentry of the finest grade and freshest application. I believe the information binder says that marine craftsmen were brought in for the remodel and I believe it. In no way do I want to imply that a classic old building was ruined by bringing it up to date with industrial grade materials. This is a classic old building which was lovingly restored and modernized with a careful eye and preservationist ethic. Walking through the building was like taking a Calgon bath, with fine details such as monogrammed trim plates and preserved old glass windows (upstairs) nuzzling the senses like bath bubbles. The richness of wood is visible in the room photos, but it must be experienced in person for the full effect. I would most definitely return for a longer stay.

Lovely stay near the river and harbor 2nd visit here. The rooms with view of the ocean are roomy and nicely decorated. Note: If you stay on one of the lower rooms you may hear some noise from the upstairs visitors. Also note most hotels along the coast do not have air conditioning - the Inn does provide fans if needed and you can leave a window open to let in the evening breeze. Overall very nice place to stay - beautiful garden areas, top notch restaurant with views of the river and harbor.

One Star at best. Please read... Upon check-in the front desk person said "were you told about room 7?" My wife and I looked at each other like uh oh…  Then she proceeded to tell us " you must have booked it on google" (we didn't) and it's kind of small. Also if you stay out past 9:30 you won't be able to get into your room because you have to cut through the restaurant and it closes at 9:30. If there was a fire, would we be locked in the hotel? At that point I said maybe we should just get our money back… And she said really sarcastically, that's not going to happen! The same woman escorted us through the restaurant to the room(we had our bags and pet, Awkward!) When we saw the room we were shocked.  It looked like it was at one time a storage room off the restaurant. It was basically a bed and a bathroom, facing the restaurant.  Meaning that people eating dinner outside can see in. It was also hot so I asked where the AC was so I could cool it down. To which she replied,  there is no AC, it will cool down by tonight. My wife and I were exhausted after a 4 hour drive so we just decided to try our  best to deal with it and not let it ruin our mini vacation.  It gets worse… We found huge hairballs and filthy sheets (see pic) We needed to charge our phones and found an extension cord that looked like it had burn marks (see pic) a cracked shower floor (see pic) (I wore sandals to avoid injury) We also discovered in the early morning that the sun shines directly in the room (see pic) so at 7am we woke up to a sweltering room in bright light.  No blackout shades to block the light or stop the restaurant patrons from peaking in… We decided not to stay a second night and just drove home.  When we checked a different person was at the front desk and said, unfortunately we will not be able to refund your second night.  ( we didn't even ask, we just wanted to get out of there) Please see all the pictures.   We've never complained about a room before and I'm hoping to save anyone else from ruining their vacation with a rude, condescending front desk person and awful hotel experience.
