Warwick, Rhode Island: Historic Coastal City Situated Between Providence and Newport

The second-largest city in Rhode Island, Warwick is situated just south of Providence and about 40 minutes north of Newport. This coastal city was the site of many important events in American history, including a pre–Revolutionary War battle known as the Gaspée Affair, which many consider to be the country’s first fight for freedom. Historic lighthouses and Victorian-era homes are scattered along the 39-mile coastline, and Goddard Memorial State Park contains evergreen forests and a beach.

About 10 miles north, Providence is an educational hub home to Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). But with an active arts scene, the city has more recently been called the “Creative Capital.” Downtown, you’ll find the arts-and-theater district, where galleries and vibrant storefront displays line the streets. Stagecraft thrives at the Tony Award–winning Trinity Repertory Company, and nearby, the Providence Performing Arts Center hosts touring Broadway shows.

Newport sits on the on the other side of Warwick on Rhode Island’s beautiful Aquidneck Island. With its picturesque cliffs running along the rocky coast, Newport understandably attracted America’s upper class at the turn of the 20th century. The prestigious Astor and Vanderbilt families joined other captains of industry in building their summer “cottages” here—sprawling estates that epitomized the Gilded Age’s glitz and glamour. You can sign up for mansion tours at the historic Marble House, The Elms, and The Breakers, a 70-room Italian Renaissance–style palazzo commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1893 and inspired by the palaces of Genoa and Turin.
