Oakland, California: Hip Coastal City Surrounded by Redwoods

Compared to other destinations in the Bay Area, Oakland is underrated and overlooked. Prices are cheaper than in neighboring San Francisco, and the dining and nightlife scenes are getting hipper all the time. There are also a number of attractions that are appealingly offbeat, from a fortune cookie factory offering tours for just $1 to a whimsical collection of storybook tableaux at the Children’s Fairyland theme park. For more traditional cultural offerings, see what’s playing at the art-deco Paramount Theatre, a National Historic Landmark that hosts movie screenings and ballet performances. You can even honor Oakland residents past at Mountain View Cemetery, a scenic hillside cemetery famed for the ostentatious memorials that dot its Millionaires’ Row.

Similarly, your options for outdoor recreation run the gamut from the kooky to the conventional. Take a gondola ride on Lake Merritt, go on a quest for cool street art, or visit Jack London Square, named after the Bay Area native who wrote The Call of the Wild. Here you can go kayaking on or bicycling alongside Oakland Inner Harbor. Just west of the city, nearly 40 miles of hiking trails in Redwood Regional Park will bring you up close to trees standing up to 150 feet tall. Keep your eyes peeled for rare golden eagles, too.

This place is a find. So close to the airport but clean, comfortable and so reasonably priced!

dated and a little rough around the edges rooms were dark and a little banged up, but overall pretty clean. the staff was nice but not overly helpful in any way. i don't think we will be coming back to this particular hotel - needs a facelift for sure.

Worst Hotel Stay Ever THIS HOTEL WAS THE WORST I'VE EVER STAYED AT! We, 2 travelers, had to relocate to new rooms twice in same night due to hotel guests disturbing the peace. First disturbance, guest in adjoining room was blasting music so loud we had pack up our belongings and ask to be relocated. The second disturbance, guests in adjoining room were fighting violently. One guest kept banging on the door to get in the room, and then threatened to shoot up the place if his companion wouldn't let him in. Fearing our safety, we packed up our belongings again and asked to be relocated to a more safe area on the property. Then, the hotel management refused to adjust the bill. We paid for two rooms and had to move twice, and no refund or discount. The hotel manager was rude and arrogant when I called back to ask for an adjustment on the bill and became verbally insulting and abusive. This hotel caters to rough and tumble clientele. Don't waste your time trying to save money at this hotel, you'll regret staying there. The more expensive rooms in the tower are identical to the cheaper rooms in the back. Management insulted me by saying we were already given an adjustment for our inconvenience because they didn't charge us for the "more expensive" upgrade. What a sham hotel. What a dangerous property. It's worth a few dollars more to ensure a peaceful, and above all, safe stay somewhere else.

very accomodating we just stayed at this hotel 10/24/2020 and was close to aokland airport with very good service for shuttle, hotel was older but clean and staff was great. we needed something inexpensive and wasn't sure what we would get . We have no complaints but compliments on the staff. They even gave us a ride to the store so we wouldn't walk which was appreciated, I would recommend to anyone who wants to payless with good service and clean place to stay.
