Boothbay Harbor, Maine: Century-Old Footbridge and Dockside Dining

The most scenic way to get across the harbor—when you’re not taking a boat—is by walking along the historic Boothbay Harbor Footbridge. Its 1,000 feet of wooden planks have spanned the waters for more than a century. On either side of the harbor, you’ll find all the hallmarks of an old-fashioned New England town: dockside chowder houses, tiny ice-cream parlors, and colorful sweetshops that sell saltwater taffy and Swedish Fish.

Sailboats, kayaks, and schooners are popular ways to get around the harbor. By day, you can take a boat ride to see several of Maine’s famous lighthouses in the distance. As night falls, schooners skim the waters to catch the best view of the setting sun. From April to October, nature lovers can explore the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens—250 acres that contain butterfly gardens, waterfalls, and tree-lined trails.

Great location, good little resort Low key, great service, not fancy but many things to do. Breakfast served by a very pleasant man with a twinkle in his eye made it taste pretty good. Setting on open calm harbor beautiful and plenty to do from pool to miniature golf to kayaks and more.

Great little resort This was our first trip to Maine and staying at the Ocean Gate Resort really made the trip. This is a wonder place to stay. They really thought of everything here. Great breakfast, mini golf, swimming pool, ping pong, canoes, kayaking, basketball, tennis, horseshoes, and they even have laundry available. The food hall offers indoor and open air seating on two decks. The grounds here are very well kept and the view from the room is just stunning. The staff is great and very friendly! The one con that I’ll give this place is that they could have done a better job with cleaning the room after the last guest. The room coffee maker had a leftover pod in it that was moldy. There were cobwebs in the corners and food crumbs around the refrigerator cabinet. There was even a sock along the bed frame. Maybe our room was just the one off when it came to cleanliness, but it could have been cleaner. Overall, I would still recommend this place as a great little getaway for anyone looking to relax just enjoy nature.

not bad but could be a lot better first, book direct with the resort and you will not have to pay a $25.00 per day resort fee. We were quite disappointed to start with but the resort kinda grew on us. This resort is for the younger, more adventerous group. We are retired and prefer a 3/4 star facility. breakfast is ok but so-so at best. Be aware, the mimosa's are $8,00 each extra. The room is clean but is short of furniture and a lot of what they represent. The bathroom is very, very tiny. No housekeeping available. No alarm clock. Coffee but no cups.
