Key West, Florida: Dazzling Sunsets, Six-Toed Cats, and Cuban Culture

Located just off Florida’s southernmost tip and north of Cuba, the island of Key West is undoubtedly the most famous of the Florida Keys. Frommer’s calls it “the land of the eternal vacation.” Most tourists come to Key West’s gulf-side beaches to snorkel, surf, or fish, but no trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where the author lived, worked, and kept his six-toed cats. More than 50 descendants of those famous felines still prowl the grounds of the museum to this day.

At nighttime, locals and visitors alike converge on the Mallory Square Dock to watch the sun dip below the Gulf of Mexico, casting swaths of deep orange and pink against the horizon. The spectacle is so breathtaking that it inspires a sunset celebration each night. The dock comes to life with traveling psychics, one-man bands, and food vendors serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and plantain chips.

Horrible The customer service is the upmost horrible and the way they treat customer's that are trying to bring their business money is even worse. I had a reservation and this location and had to cancel. i called right away, 10 minutes after I made the reservation, they had not even billed my card yet. Reservations Department was supposed to notify management to request reimbursement with a follow up email to me 24 hours later letting me know reimbursement was made. I have received no response to date in regards to any reimbursement. I got notification several hours later that they billed my card, for the FULL amount. I called and spoke to management yesterday in regards to the situation. They are now claiming I was a "no show" therefore, I must pay the full amount for the night...when I gave them ample notice of my situation. I'm still waiting on Tamika to call me back after she "promised" I would hear from her a couple hours later to let me know what happened and why they did not get my request from reservations to cancel. Oh and to add to it, while on the phone with me, she had to deal with a customer complaint in the hotel of cleaning crew going into someone's room when they put the privacy sign at their door. Since I never heard back from Tamika, I called back and left a message for another manager, no response. I called back today and finally spoke to Claudia who stated she can't do anything since it's a "no show". There is nothing they will do about. I am now $250 out of pocket for not even stepping a foot on their property which is ridiculous. They should have some compassion for guests. Even as a penalty, if being so, should not be the full amount of the night. I'm pretty sure since they did have ample notification from me about having to cancel, they just rebooked my room and took my money on top of it. Giving you lame excuses after. Scam!!

The delta between $$ and what is delivered is too large to merit a good review Booked two rooms last weekend. The place is ok...but just ok, as in mediocre. **The difference between what they charged and what they delivered is too big for it to merit a positive recommendation** We were underwhelmed: The ocean view was 50% blocked by another building not part of the property. We overlooked a nice mangrove-lined lagoon but the area around it had blue plastic garbage strewn about. They charge $27/day for a parking spot in a standard open air lot. A piece of cement. Ridiculous. They also charge $50/day for a "resort fee". The fitness room was unfit: It was tiny. One treadmill machine did not work at all, another did so poorly. The alcohol wipe dispenser was empty. We had a a 2-room block, 4 adults, 2 per room for two days. They gave us breakfast coupons for one day. Would not budge. On the positive side: Rooms were ok. The food was good. Staff was nice. They did what they could with what they had. I booked with my AMEX platinum, through the AMEX travel website: I am used to them having my back. Because I trust them, and we were in a bit of a hurry, I did not read the fine print re: the fees noted above. My mistake. But I won't go back to this particular hotel. I do not mind spending money for good things. I do mind doing so for mediocrity.

Family friendly Jesse and Haley for the aquatic education are so knowledgeable. Friendly, informative and makes you excited about sea life. My kids loved talking to them! Saturday afternoon by the pool. Oceans Edge is a great family spot…looking forward to kayaking tomorrow!
