South Haven, Michigan: Small Town with Historical Harbor Walk and Outdoor Activities

A lumber town in the 19th century, South Haven later transformed into a boating center thanks to its prime location along the Black River. Steamers and schooners were built here before being shipped off to Chicago and Milwaukee. The town’s harbor walk wraps around the mouth of the river and leads to a red iron lighthouse built in 1903. Along the way, the walk passes the five buildings of the Michigan Maritime Museum, which includes a replica boathouse and an original U.S. Life-Saving Service crew quarters.

Linking South Haven with Kalamazoo to the east, the Kal-Haven Trail runs more than 30 miles and is popular with snowboarders in winter. As the weather warms up in the spring, hikers and bikers make use of the trail, while other visitors head to local championship golf courses and vineyards. South Haven sits at the tail end of what locals refer to as Michigan’s Art Coast, a string of galleries lining the Blue Star Highway between South Haven and Saugatuck.

Good times! Off Map is great! This was our first time glamping and we brought our three little kids. The property is beautiful and very well maintained. The owners were welcoming and accommodating. Overall a great place to take a break from city life. We are looking forward to returning.

Glamping The experience was great for my daughters and I. We shared a tent with 3 twin beds. Linens were clean and the temperature in the tent was just right. Very close to South Haven and Saugatuck for easy day visits to town and beaches. If you’re looking for a camping experience with little effort this is a must!

Lovely stay Comfy beds, clean toilet and showers, bonfire and s'mores, freshly baked muffins for breakfast. You do nothing but stargazing and listening to the birds. Very well maintained ground, main building has good collection of board games in case of rainy day. We love our stay

Glamping Wow what an experience! My husband has always wanted to try this given that we have never camped before. Perfect setting. Nice bonfire and roasting fun marshmallows. Private, but also so close to downtown and the beach. Would do this again.

Quiet and comfortable The tents had everything we needed and bed was very comfortable. Staff was amazing - helped us get our stove lit when the wood wouldn't catch and provided a tasty breakfast in the morning. Close to town and activities but secluded when you wanted quiet. Would recommend creating a few more walking paths so you could explore the grounds further.
