Hotel at a Glance: Orchard Street Hotel

Located in one of Manhattan's oldest neighborhoods, Orchard Street Hotel gives you a fine introduction to the city. It's within walking distance of numerous well-known museums, shops, and restaurants. Katz's Delicatessen, one of Manhattan's most-famous delis, is just down the block, as is the award-winning Tenement Museum. Hop on the subway—there are three stations within a five-minute walk—to reach many other iconic attractions within minutes.

  • Start the day with complimentary tea or coffee.
  • Unique design note: The back lobby boasts a relaxing waterfall.
  • In-room amenities: Guest rooms have 32- or 42-inch LED TVs and complimentary WiFi.
  • Hidden gem: Walk 10 minutes from the hotel to stroll amid vegetable gardens and fruit trees in the Liz Christy Garden. It's one of the city's best tucked-away green spaces, and it's open year-round.

Manhattan's Lower East Side: Chic Boutiques, Restaurant Row, and Contemporary-Art Galleries

If you were a German, Irish, Polish, or Jewish immigrant coming to America in pursuit of a better life in the 19th or early 20th century, odds were good that you’d wind up sharing space in an overcrowded tenement building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The neighborhood—one of the city’s oldest—was a refuge for New York’s newest and poorest residents for generations. You can learn more at the Tenement Museum, located in a five-story brick building that once housed some 7,000 working-class immigrants.

In recent years, the Lower East Side’s identity as a welcome mat for newcomers has shifted as gentrification began to reshape the neighborhood. Pushcarts and rundown storefronts have given way to trendy boutiques along Orchard Street and a chic “restaurant row” on Clinton Street. What's more, the relocation of the New Museum has attracted a slew of contemporary-art galleries. Some of the old mainstays have stuck around, though, including Katz’s Delicatessen and Russ & Daughters, which has been selling premium smoked fish, bagels, and other specialty foods since 1914.

Do yourself a favor, don’t even try this hotel. It looks so dangerous and overcrowded! There’s bars right outside the hotel, so you don’t really get that quietness of being in a hotel after a long travel. Our room phone was not working, so we had to go downstairs every time we needed something and the WIFI wasn’t working!! The General Manager really needs classes on being “professional”

Awesome experience and a lively neighborhood! The room is simplistic but clean. Everything functioned well and the bed was very comfortable. Excellent accommodations at a great value for Lower Manhattan. Room was small with little space around the bed but that was to be expected. Staff was superb!

Great location Small room but was fine for me as a solo traveler. Easy and quick checkin. Absolutely love the area. It’s so close to convenience store, late night deli, and my favorite bars. I chose it because of the location and it made my trip so much easier. Nice views from the room, so much sunlight in the morning when I open the shades. Hotel could use some updating, but if you aren’t looking to hang out in the room all day this is a good place to stay.
