The Wildwoods, New Jersey: Classic Boardwalk Fun and Doo-Wop-Era History

Less than an hour south of Atlantic City, you’ll find the Wildwoods, a cluster of towns set on a barrier island just off New Jersey’s southernmost point. Though the area is more subdued than Atlantic City, families will still find a dizzying assortment of carnival rides, malt shops, and arcade games along the Wildwoods Boardwalk.

During the 1950s and ’60s, the area became a hot spot for up-and-coming rock and doo-wop singers, including Chubby Checker, Bill Haley, and Bobby Rydell, who immortalized the city’s carefree spirit in the tune “Wildwood Days.” You can learn more about the era at the Doo Wop Experience and Neon Sign Garden, which pays homage to mid-20th-century music, decor, and advertising.

First Groupon hotel purchase was great! Clean, contemporary, family friendly hotel. Steps to the beach. Friendly, accomodating staff. Plenty of parking. Very pleased. Would recommend to others!

I was there with my grandson, so the king bed was fine. I had requested two queens but this was okay.

Four generations and counting. Our family has been coming to the Pan American for 40+year’s. The best place for family traditions to continue. Four generations and will continue. Class walk to shops on board walk, great little water park for the kids a short walk away. Peaceful, safe, clean, feels like our second home.

Horrible Treatment I called to make a 2 night reservation. I told them I had a service dog. Was told it was ok with the person who I made the reservation at the hotel with. The confirmation came in as a first floor with 7 steps. I had been told there would be no steps so I called back. Another woman answered and said she would change it to the second floor. I mentioned again I had a service dog. Now 2nd person asking what is the service dog for. I told them. Again, I said I have a card for it and she has a crate (23 pound yorkie mix). She put me on hold 3 times saying had to check this would be ok. Again...isn't it a law? Then Maureen who I think said was the manager comes on the line. Again, asking what the dog is for and I said I told 2 others why and again I have a card and a crate. She goes on to say emotional dogs not allowed. Again, I say she is a service dog. I said you are making me feel very uncomfortable and I will be driving 4 hours to your place and I do not want any issues. She then asks if I want a refund. Unbelievable. I agreed to the refund. I will NEVER go to this place. Hostile treatment!!

The Best My family has been coming to the Pan American since 2011, coming back every year is like returning to a 2nd home. The hotel is immaculately clean and regular updates and renovations keep the property looking top notch all while maintaining the very cool mid-century modern feel. While the physical hotel is top notch the staff is really what makes this place special. Paul and Bob at the desk are two of the nicest people in the world and also have a great sense of humor. The onsite restaurant Alosi's is a longtime favorite of ours and the location just can't be beat; close enough to walk to the boardwalk but far enough away to have a peaceful experience. We can't wait for our 2024 trip!
