Anaheim, California: Magical Play Land About a Half Hour from Huntington Beach

Less than an hour from Hollywood and Universal Studios, Anaheim is perfectly situated for making the most of a Southern California getaway. But most visitors never make it that far, as Disneyland Park has long dominated the city’s tourism scene. As Walt Disney’s original park, it has a handful of classic attractions that, though upgraded over the years, have been around since the park opened in 1955. You can ride the Mad Tea Party spinning teacups, hop on the King Arthur Carrousel, or sail in the Storybook Land Canal Boats (Walt Disney personally planted the small pine near Geppetto’s home).

Disneyland Park has plenty of modern rides too, including Cars Land, one of the newer additions to Disney California Adventure Park and a life-size re-creation of the town from Disney Pixar’s Cars. The highlight here is the slot-car attraction, which puts you in an automated vehicle that swerves around animatronic characters before engaging another car in a high-speed race.

If you’re in the mood for thrills, ascend the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror before dropping in a heart-pounding free fall, or climb aboard the roller coasters thundering around Paradise Pier with sweeping views of the park. Alternatively, trade fairy dust for white sand in Huntington Beach, where you'll find 3.5 miles of free-to-the-public beaches filled with surfing, pickup volleyball games, and countless stalls hawking flip-flops and seashell-themed wares.

Great location. Noisy resort. Location is fantastic, literally 15 minute walk to the Harbour entrance of Disney. Blocks from 2 Starbucks, Jersey Mikes and all the stores/restaurants of Garden Walk. The room itself is moderate at best. The bathroom is quite nice, everything works as it should. The fridge in our room basically had two settings, frozen and moderately cold, nothing in between. The 2 queen beds were relatively comfortable but one had not been rotated in quite some time so the side where the TV is was sunk, we moved it ourselves and helped quite a bit. The worst part of this resort is the noise. The walls are paper thin and because many of the rooms have connecting doors it’s even worse. You can literally hear everything that happens next to you, in the halls and outside. The windows are not soundproof, our room was across the parking lot from the pool and we could hear almost word for word conversations that were happening there. Wyndham is also actively selling here so you get the “parking pass” scam which at this resort is a total farce because it’s mandatory valet parking. On that note the $20/night (plus tax which pushes it close to $25) isn’t the best thing of any resort. Seems these places have to get you somehow.

Clean and Comfy This RCI property has substantially improved since our last stay. Staff is more professional. The grounds and building look better. We found the beds to be very comfortable. Units are clean. Bring your own kitchen tools and spices and enjoy the lovely rooftop deck with barbecue grills.

Be prepared to walk to and from Disney Well-run and comfortable. However, the ART bus service to and from Disney isn't reliable and doesn't have a timetable making it almost unusable. You can stand outside the hotel waiting for ages, and then be in the same situation at the Disney Transportation Centre late at night. The so-called timetable is irrelevant. There is a live map showing the whereabouts of the bus but that's also useless when the driver does things like park off the route to take a break. Another couple we stood with waiting for the bus told us they waited over an hour and were then told the drivers had been in a meeting.

Worldmark missed the mark with Peacock Siutes The pictures online of the Peacock Suites accommodations are not anything like the room! Management even recognizes that the on-line images, including a non-existing coffee station (you need to brew your own in your room), do not accurately showcase their hotel. We stayed in a 1 bedroom King Suite that was dingy & dank, cheap & substandard. I trusted, when booking with Worldmark, that they would only arrange hotel accommodations for their guest with hotels that meet a minimum standard. We left after our 2nd night, forgoing our 3rd night, and booked ourselves at another hotel. We couldn’t manage another night in that room.
