Every guest room at the Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina features a view of the Gulf of Mexico. The 1,500-foot beach in front of the hotel is roomier than ever, thanks to the completion of the Fort Myers beach restoration project in 2011, which significantly widened the sandy area. If you want an even closer sea encounter, borrow a kayak for free from the front desk.
- Take a wildlife expedition around the shoreline, tide pools, and upland habitats with the resort’s onsite naturalist.
- Drop the kids off at Kidds Kammp, a tot-friendly program that includes crafts, nature exploration, and other activities.
- Poolside eats: Dig into fried calamari and lemongrass chicken sticks at Bongo’s Beach Bar and Grill.
- Relax with a warm-stone massage or deep-tissue therapeutic massage at the onsite Aquagene Spa.
- Dock your boat: The Fort Myers Beach marina, equipped with 41 slips and floating docks, offers direct access to the gulf.
- Wake up to a breakfast of omelets, cereals, and fresh pastries at Jack’s.
- Free beach chairs are available for guests of the hotel.
Fort Myers, Florida: Sun-Soaked Beaches and Historic Homes
When Henry Ford and Thomas Edison needed a break, they both vacationed in Fort Myers. It doesn’t take a genius to get the appeal of the city: it has consistently pleasant weather and an attractive location along the Caloosahatchee River and the Atlantic Ocean. A hundred years later, tourists still take to the town for swimming, parasailing, or sunbathing on its dozens of beaches.
Though the coast is Fort Myers’s main draw, there’s plenty to do further inland, too. For one, the city pays tribute to its famous winter visitors at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. You can tour the inventors’ winter homes and see early automobiles, exotic flowers, and one of the country’s biggest banyan trees. The Southwest Florida Museum of History sheds light on the native tribes, Spanish explorers, and early American settlers who shaped the region; meanwhile, kids can touch sea creatures or do a mock dinosaur dig with the hands-on science exhibits at the Imaginarium.
Rows of palm trees flank the pier near the downtown River District and art galleries are scattered throughout the area, housed in century-old buildings and empty seashells. Try some fresh-caught seafood at one of the restaurants here, or check out one of the boutiques stocked with apparel and knickknacks.
