Cabarete, Dominican Republic: Windsurfing, Kiteboarding, and Diverse Wildlife

Cabarete was just a quiet beach town on the northeast corner of the Dominican Republic until the late 1980s, when Cabarete’s first tourists began to arrive. These travelers were windsurfers, who flocked to the area for its ideal wind and wave conditions. Today, Cabarete routinely hosts professional and amateur windsurfing competitions, and the laid-back village is often hailed as the country’s capital of both kiteboarding and windsurfing. You can show off your chops or sign up for a lesson at Kite Beach.

If you prefer traditional surfing, there’s El Encuentro Beach. An offshore reef near the entrance to the bay is a popular site for scuba-diving and snorkeling, too. For land adventures, visit the El Choco National Park for hiking, biking, or exploring underground caves. The park is also home to a rich ecosystem of animal and plant life, including one of the smallest hummingbirds in the world.

Great 3BR Unit Poolfront with Beach View, Terrible, Non-Responsive Service 6 of us. Really disappointed with the staff responsiveness, even if nice unit. Had to consistently request service three times with escalating displeasure before anything got addressed. $25 for each housekeeping service. Stingy on towels and toilet paper. Expensive drinks double the price compared to off-resort down the beach. Day 1: sliding glass door lock broken, so we couldn’t secure unit - finally addressed after 3rd request Sunday morning. Day 2: 2nd bathroom shower floor unlevel, flowing into bathroom - said they’d bring us replacement bathmat and beach towel, but no-showed, then on 3rd attempt said they’d only replace towels once per week without fee, which we didn’t want to waste til midweek housekeeping. Discovered we had no extra trash bags either. Day 3: Catamaran tour off-resort, then St Patricks Bay bar crawl, so out of unit and happy, but bath towels getting progressively dirty. Day 4: 2 rooms ran out of TP (no 2nd rolls in any BRs). 3 requests went unanswered, then housekeeping closed at 5pm, so had to buy at local market. Sand and dirt accumulating, so paid and scheduled housekeeping for Day 5. Day 5 (Today): It’s 4 o’clock, towels piled on floor for easy counting, beer and water bottles, trash and sand everywhere despite our best efforts. Just made 3rd trip to Reception to say we want to shower and go to eat, drink and be merry -closed with Now, Vaminos! Day 6, 7, and 8: To be continued - should we tell them bedroom doors are swollen and won’t close? Otherwise, having a great time in Cabarete…because it’s awesome ✌️ We’d

This place has its ups and downs but more ups then downs This place definitely has its ups and downs, but overall, I’d say it’s worth checking out! This hotel is just a hop away from some fantastic bars and restaurants. The hotel itself is made up of about five buildings. One of them, the Imperial Suites, which is located right on the beach, while the others sit across a very busy street. Just a heads-up: if you end up with a street-facing room, it can get a bit noisy since it’s on a busy road. Now, the rooms? Absolutely gorgeous and spacious! We had a single room, but our friends were in one of the three-bedroom units, and wow, it was stunning—complete with a full kitchen and three separate bathrooms. Perfect for a larger group! There are three restaurants in the hotel, each offering stunning ocean views. Seriously, the grounds are immaculate; you can tell they take pride in keeping everything clean and well-maintained. They offer all inclusive but honestly it’s not worth the money. There are too many delicious and inexpensive restaurants just a few feet away. A couple of quirks to keep in mind: there’s no daily room service included, and if you want your room cleaned, they’ll charge you an extra $15. When we checked in, we received two towels, two beach towels, and two hand towels. But if you need more, it’s an extra $5, and you have to return the old ones first. They’re pretty strict about towel accountability—no towel, no checkout! Oh, and don’t lose your room key or the bracelet they give you; they’ll charge you for that too. But on the bright side, we ordered room service during our stay, and it was delicious! All things considered. The cleanliness, beautiful rooms, and prime location make it a solid choice, even with a few extra fees here and there.

In good location but very noisy When we arrived after 14 hours travel, we were first advised to calculate and report the number of towels every day in our room, since we are responsible to pay them if something misses. First morning we were said that we are having a free breakfast as RCI members. However, we were offered to buy Luxury Vacation Club membership during 4 hours. I declined the offer, which was too good to be true. For myself all this seemed very odd and somewhat suspicious. There were 3 restaurants in the hotel, which were mostly empty. However, there were lots of personnel, at least 10, although the number of customers was much less. In Christmas party there were 6 guests although they said that the hotel was fully booked. The resort is located just beside a road with very much car and motorcycle traffic. The noise is loud and disturbs a lot also during nighttime. There were lots of rain when we came. The water flooded 5 metres inside the room. Everything was wet, clothes, towels, carpet. First the staff was wondering how this can happen, but after we realized that also restaurants put towels on the floors on front of the doors, we asked the same for our hotel room, and they cleaned our room after two days. We asked many times for a room upgrade, but they were not able to arrange this even though we would have paid for this. They said that the hotel is fully booked. However, in pools there were only few people and the windows were mainly dark. There is a big souvenir shop at the ground floor, but it was closed totally during 21.12.2024-4.1.2025, at the same time when they said that the hotel was fully booked. The rooms itself are in good condition if not taking into account the flooding water, and the beds and showers are good. The beach is very near and in good condition. The sand is fine and the water warm. Pool service and room service was good. The gym was very good with high-quality equipment and ocean view! Our reservation was during 2 weeks. However, we needed to move to another hotel after one week because of the noise and discrepancies with the hotel.
