Hotel at a Glance: Ragged Point Inn and Resort

This resort doesn't rely on fancy decor or a flashy atmosphere to impress guests—it lets the natural beauty of Big Sur do the work. The cliff-top location treats guests to impressive views of the Pacific Ocean.

  • Onsite dining: Dig into steak sirloin or pan-roasted diver scallops or opt for lighter bites at the espresso bar.
  • Head to the beach by climbing down 300–500 feet of majestic, rocky cliffsides.
  • See the inspiration for Xanadu: Take an 18-minute drive to Hearst Castle, the former home of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst and the inspiration for the mansion in Citizen Kane.

Big Sur, California: Stunning Coastal Scenery Beloved by Famous Authors

In Big Sur, the rugged Santa Lucia Mountains jut directly out of the Pacific Ocean, forging one of the most dramatic vistas in central California. Green and golden flowered meadows carpet the mountain slopes, and a little farther inland, you can hike through redwood groves. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is a must-visit; tucked amid its native black-tailed deer and redwood groves are the 60-foot-high Pfeiffer Falls and Pfeiffer Beach, where sand is streaked with purple from nearby manganese-garnet deposits.

Because of its natural beauty and relative isolation, Big Sur has long attracted artists and writers from across the world. Jack Kerouac and Hunter S. Thompson have spent time here. American writer and painter Henry Miller spent 18 years living in Big Sur, too; in tribute, one of his friends converted a home into the Henry Miller Memorial Library, which celebrates his life and career. Stop here to shop for books or sip a cup of tea right next to a fireplace, just as Miller did.

This place is breathtaking!!!! I had to pinch myself to believe the incredible room we were staying in. Everything from the romantic, cozy fireplace to the ocean front porch and the properties private hike down to a beach was fantastic. I’d come back in a heart beat.

You're paying for the view Look, you're paying for the view. So make sure you get a room with a view. Otherwise you're just paying for being at the only place in the area. Now the views are INCREDIBLE, once in a lifetime. Beautiful, well maintained property. However, the rooms are dingy and old, our bathroom faucet didn't work and had to be repaired twice in one evening. The food is good but budget for it, it's very pricy. Be aware that if you don't have ATT you may not have any cell service at all, and the WIFI is patchy. It's worth doing it just once, that's for sure, but don't expect the type of room you'd typically get for this price.

Bad Customer Service I have worked in hospitality for many years and Chris at the front desk is the most unprofessional front desk agent I have experienced. Too bad a cool resort like this has an employee that does not care about customer service. The disregard for the resorts reputation is astounding. His words were: we are taking your money the road is closed and we need it. Unbelievable on how you can let this kind if service happen, poor job on management.

5 Star view!! A fun place to stay the night with a 5 star view but a 4 star hotel. Enjoyed the trip up from SLO arriving early afternoon. Rooms were ready early so we checked in and did the hike to the beach below. It was short but steep and slippery. With good hiking shoes and poles it was doable but challenging. Sunsets are great and views both directions are breathtaking! Rooms had very comfortable beds and were clean but getting a little rough around the edges in spots. We ate dinner and breakfast at the Inn and both were very good (but not great). Highly recommend the Halibut Fish and Chips if you like that sort of thing. Big crowds at lunch from day trippers but Highway 1 closure seems to have killed the overnight crowds. Dinner and Breakfast was just us and a handful of guests. Overall a really fun experience and I would recommend but don't expect a five star hotel or you will be disappointed.
