Green Bay, Wisconsin: Outdoor Adventures in Packer Country

Green Bay hugs the western shores of Lake Michigan in northeast Wisconsin. Though it can get pretty frosty in the winter, few people seem to mind—outdoor enthusiasts take advantage of cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snow tubing. Less than an hour to the east, Kewaunee County’s Winter Park features exhilarating tubing runs and a chute with a 70-foot vertical drop. In warmer months, the trails attract hikers and bicyclists, and windsurfers and fishers take to the lake.

While its natural setting is nothing to shake a stick at, there’s no denying Green Bay’s main claim to fame—it’s the capital of Packer country. A few of the town’s street names are even named after legendary Packer football players; keep your eyes peeled for Brett Favre Pass and Lombardi Avenue. Every year, hordes of die-hard fans make pilgrimage to Lambeau Field, which offers guided tours. Lambeau is also home to the Packer Hall of Fame, a Cheesehead shrine lined with jerseys, memorabilia, and the team’s championship trophies (the Packer Hall of Fame is currently under renovations but will re-open sometime in 2015).

For a fun day trip, take the 45-mile minute drive to Door County. It has 300 miles of craggy Lake Michigan shoreline dotted with lighthouses and state parks. Former fishing villages along the shore are now filled with charming mom-and-pop restaurants serving homemade swedish pancakes and old-fashioned ice-cream sodas. The area has a strong artistic presence, too; in many of the art galleries here, you can watch local artisans craft original pieces using copper, glass, and eggshells from nearby farms.
