Des Moines, Iowa: Eclectic City amid Midwest Scenery

Iowa’s capital city lies along the Des Moines River in the center of the state. The brick-paved streets of the eclectic East Village are lined with art galleries, trendy cafés, and historical buildings. Larger entertainment establishments include the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, Adventureland Park, and the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center—where, in 1982, Ozzy Osbourne infamously bit the head off a bat.

For outdoor fun, there’s Jester Park, which encompasses a golf course and 8 miles of hiking trails. Bison and elk herds roam the land just as they did 200 years ago; you can watch the animals from viewing stations or check out accompanying art exhibits.

This was a great place to stay for our family with 4 adults and 1 five-year-old. We had 2 rooms that were adjoining (as we had requested over the phone), away from the pool (quieter.) Our son LOVED the aquatic center and the arcade, and the Castaways restaurant breakfast was easy, fast, and just what we needed (and it was covered by the food coupon that came with the Groupon!) The rooms were clean and comfortable, there was plenty of parking, and the staff were all very helpful. We will definitely stay here again!

Great staff, property needs updating We stayed one night here and used the water park for my daughter’s 10th birthday party. The water park was great for somewhat younger kids. Chad, who runs the restaurant, was fantastic and very helpful in answering our questions. There was a line at the front desk when we went to check in, but the front desk staff was great and very friendly. The hotel could use some updating but our room was clean and quiet. Overall the price wasn’t bad for what we got.

Instant Regret This hotel used to be so great. I will NOT bring my kids back here ever. Check in is at 4 & we could not get in til 8 pm! When we got in our room there was pizza on the floor-chlorine in pool was too much, couldn’t even enjoy swimming-key cards kept failing and had to get new ones-fire alarm went off and had to evacuate-didn’t have an appropriate amount of towels in bathroom per # of guests, check in was extremely slow, the hotel was filthy. Such a disappointing way to spend my money on my son’s birthday. 10/10 do not recommend. The only plus was the arcade, but again..filthy.

I would give 0 stars if possible! Horrible place to stay! Worst hotel we've ever stayed at!!! The worst part was that we booked it for 7 nights and we couldn't get our money back. We were stuck staying there for 8 days! This hotel is a total nightmare!! We were in a 2 queen bedroom with 4 adults and 1 toddler. This hotel is not very clean. It also smells mildewy. When we arrived there were only 2 towels in our bathroom!? For 5 people! The bathroom pocket door was very loud every time you opened it because it was missing wheels so we woke each other up every night when going to the bathroom. It didn't lock either. They also don't have shower curtains so our bathroom floor was wet after each shower. Not to mention no fan in the bathroom so it was hot and steamy too! Worst of all, the service is horrible! We don't trust room service so we'd rather not have our room cleaned during our stay and instead just take out our own trash and get towels from the front desk (which we've always been able to do at other hotels). Every time we went to the front desk for clean towels we were told someone would bring them up and they never did! One of the employees told us that we need to get room service in order to get clean towels! Which is ridiculous! I've been to many hotels before and have always been given towels at the front desk! But don't expect that from this hotel. We eventually just started asking the maids once we saw them in the halls but they would only give us 1 or 2 at a time. My son's water bottle leaked all over the bed so we went to the front desk and asked for bedding to be sent up to our room but it never was!! At 9:00 at night we had to go to the front desk and demanded bedding to be able to go to sleep and they only had a couple of sheets to give us. Sadly, we only encountered 1 friendly and helpful staff member during our 8 day stay. Don't expect much from the complimentary breakfast! It was the worst I have ever had at a hotel! None of the food was prepared well and they only have 6 choices (breakfast pizza, pancakes, sausages, greasy hash browns, and an old waffle maker). So disappointing!! It doesn't get any better when speaking about the gym. Every cardio machine was broken and they only have a few dumbbells. The only matching sets were 5 lbs, 20 lbs and 25 lbs. Luckily I was able to get the resistance up on the bike, but the screen was broken so I couldn't see what I was doing. This hotel does not have any pride in their work obviously. The worst part is that we paid over $100 a night to stay here and it was the worst experience we've ever had! If Wyndham is going to treat this hotel as a motel then they need to lower their prices!! They also need to train their staff on customer service!
